What are the benifits, and the concerns on Interbase, compared with MySQL?

Hope to hear some different opinions..

Hi Steffen,

To the best of my knowledge, MySQL does not support transactions, to mimic
one is never sufficient for real world applications. So in event where
errors occured, there is no way to rollback. So.... your database may
report no errors, but it may contain numerous transactional errors.

Thanks.

Hi there,

InterBase has native transaction support - MySQL not at all
InterBase enforces referential integrity - MySQL not at all, and never will
InterBase has triggers and stored procedures (server side code) - MySQL not
at all
InterBase has events - MySQL not at all...

Does anyone know, if there will be a stable ODBC driver availeble, and if it
will be free of charge as well?

..ODBC support is one advantage for MySQL, as ASP development is made
impossible without either ODBC or OLEDB support.

Hi Steffen,

I have been using Easysoft ODBC without any problems for my ASP and my
applications. Even if you do have some problems, just hightlight it to Mr
Nick Norham and they will be resolved in no time. Mr Nick Norham is very
serious with his products.

Thanks.

But MySQL is pretty good at we development.

P.S.
Don't get me wrong, I'm an IB fan, but I miss a lot of things from MySQL
too.

Interbase is a mature, business-class product and MySQL, though it has
potential, is just not their in terms of functionality in my opinion.
I personally don't really care about the lack of transaction support
in MySQL, but you also supposedly can't use embedded SELECTs (i.e.

SELECT field FROM Table WHERE LASTNAME IN
(SELECT lastname value FROM other table WHERE condition))

I just got a free PostgreSQL CD in the mail... from the packaging text
it looks a little more mature.

One thing I will say for MySQL is that many people use it with PHP /
Apache, so the knowledge base is probably pretty big. I was hoping
Interbase would unseat it as the open-source database king and I'm
still not sure why it hasn't. Probably because MySQL is in all the
Linux distros and Interbase isn't.

Yep. It is hard to understand when Interbase has been open source for a
whole five months <g>.

I think perhaps Interbase would gain terrain, if we had a free ODBC-driver.
All though $100 is cheap(easysoft) for a SQL server. I think maney would
choose MySQL as there seems to be more "commuinty" in that lair.

A fact for me is that i need either ODBC or OLEDB support, in the server i'm
going to choose. I would like it to be Interbase.. But i'm leaning towards
MySQL, becaurce of the free ODBC support... And I think a lot of developers
have this dillemma :-(

Don't get me wrong, not that i'm saying there's no community feeling in this
lair...:-)

Right, I agree with that except that Interbase 4 has been available
for Linux for a couple of years now. Of course it wasn't open source
but it was free. Your point about Interbase 6's open-source infancy
is well taken, but in the Linux community (name your media...
newsgroups, magazines, etc) it is rarely mentioned. Yesterday in
Linux Enterprise I read an article that happened to name off a few of
database packages in a paragraph in a PHP article and Interbase was
not among them.

I just think it is more deserving of attention by the community and I
think the only way to get it there is for Borland to encourage major
Linux distribution vendors to include it in their distributions. I
think the retail Mandrake 7.2 includes it, but not the ISO downloads
from the site. My first thought when the whole Borprise/Corel thing
happened was "wow... Joe Average will probably buy a distribution from
Corel off the shelf, which is great because it would certainly include
Interbase". If Interbase could be somehow pushed into the major
distributions as a priority package (i.e. one that gets included when
you download the ISO from the given vendor and not stuck on an add-on
disc) I think it would get more exposure, and from there perhaps more
acceptance.

You can use most of these drivers for a test period. This should be
sufficient for learning :-)

Hi there

Compare MySQL with Paradox, not Interbase.

When the choice stands between the two, i think it makes sense to compare
them :-)
