Hi,

I have a big problem. Some client computers (Win 2000, XP Pro) cannot access
my Interbase 6 server (Win 2000) while other can access it without any
problem. The error message is: "Undefined service gds_db/tcp". The
connection string is identical on all client computers.

I already know about the SERVICES file, the blank line after the entry
"gds_db 3050/tcp", etc... It worked fine in the past on these
computers. It stopped working for an unknow reason. The problem seems to be
a security issue between Windows and TCP/IP. Even reinstalling TCP/IP does
not fix it.

Nobody have answers to this problem into groups so it's for this reason I
ask it again today. Any suggestions will be appreaciated.

Thanks!

You say it worked in the past on those computers. Were any of them upgraded
to Win2K SP4? I think there is a problem with the winsock implementation in
SP4 and possibly XP, that causes problems with IB6.

Maybe somebody with more knowledge of the subject can jump in here.

Is there a firewall blocking port 3050?

I don't think it's the issue here.
Thanks.

If you are trying to connect using the server name try using the IP
address instead to rule out a DNS problem.

I already did that. Same error message. I don't understand.
What I'm sure about is that it's not an InterBase issue. It's a
Windows/TCP/IP issue (again...)

Thanks for your help.

Perhaps you have mismatched client and server versions
or several different versions of gds32.dll laying around?

No, everything is fine on this side. I should look on the Windows TCP/IP
side and not the Interbase side.

Hi there,

I had the same problem on my Windows XP PC and today i was finally able to
fix it.
The problem was in the TCP/IP Stack.

If you are having troubles relating to this type of problem, some of the
symptoms you encounter may
be that you can "ping" pages on the internet, but your browser always
returns a "page cannot be
displayed" error.

You can fix this problem under Windows XP with the following utillity
WinsockXPFix.exe
http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/WinsockXPFix.exe
Please be sure to back up your registry.

Hope this fixes your problem.

There are tools to fix the winsock voor other windows versions to just
search the internet using
Google or so.

Greetings Eelco

What is this and what does it do? Just curious.

Hi David,

It is a utility that resets the TCP/IP stack, if I understood it correctly.
You can find more info over the utility on internet, just use google or an
other
search engine.

Greetings
Eelco

Essentially, it resets some registry keys to the out-of-box state for
an XP install.
