Hi All,

I am an Oracle user and have been for the past 4+ years in my current
position. After dispute over billing we have decided to research our
alternatives and hence I have found myself installing Borland InterBase 6.5
on Solaris 8. I have installed the server and client and managed to start
the server.

I am reading so much about this IBConsole and it's GUI, yet I am unable to
find it or use it!!!! Does it come with the initial packages ??? If so,
where???

I found the windows version, believing I could connect to the database
remotely but it continues to give read errors ...

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Shannon

Hi Shannon,

If IBConsole for Windows isn't working, you might want to update to the
latest version of it.

The latest version can be found at Borland CodeCentral:
http://codecentral.borland.com/codecentral/ccweb.exe/author?authorid=102

(link might wrap)

Alternatively, if you're used to Oracle 3rd party tools, give InterBase
Workbench a try - www.interbaseworkbench.com - I've worked with it to
administer InterBase databases on Windows, Linux and Solaris servers.

There are versions of IBConsole for Linux and Windows, but not
Solaris.

You need to mention what the errors are if you want help fixing
them. Connecting to an IB server running on Solaris from a Windows
client should not be a problem.

Obviously? GDS32.dll is the InterBase Windows Client library. Where the server
is doesn't matter, your client machine still needs the InterBase client
installed.

Hi Shannon,

Have you installed the InterBase CLIENT software? gds32.dll is part of
this... Install it and you will notice that everything works just fine...

Name a C/S DB that you don't have to install the client software for the OS you
want to run a client on. With Oracle you have the same situation you have to
install the 500+ MB Oracle Windows client if you want to access the DB on
another server or platform.

Yes - you install the server side portion on the server machine and the
client
side portion on every client machine.

Client and server for all three supported platforms are already on
the IB CD.

Oracle does not require you download the entire database if you only want to
use the client.

Neither does InterBase. The InterBase client is ~10 MB as a full install, the
minimum custom Oracle Client install under Windows is 290MB, 750+ MB for a full
install.
