I have had no problem with Delphi 6 Enterprise for quite a while.
However, when trying the demo of dbIsam ver. 4.02 I immediately encountered
an error.
I was told by Elevate that Delphi6 Update 2 was needed.
I downloaded the update but it can't start the installation wizard and does
not install.
When I run the download,
unpacking takes place
and it next indicates it is about to begin the wizard
but then there is a slight pause and nothing happens.
The installer shuts down, too.
I tried to run the download several times and I watched the tasks list.
When the wizard is supposed to be starting up there is a short delay
and then the task vanishes.
I even unzipped the download
and tried to run Setup from among the unzipped files.
The same behavior was seen.
I hunted around for information on this and all I found were
"Setup is unable to find an existing installation when applying Update Pack
2 for Delphi 6"
and
"Getting error -145 when trying to apply the Delphi 6 Update".
Each of these refers to missing or corrupt Registry values.
In my case the Registry values are present and they don't look corrupt.
The directory location is proper, and no reference is given for what the
other values ought to be.
What do you suggest I do?
Thank you for your guidance and suggestions.
I did more than just uninstall Delphi. I tried to find all references to
Delphi and Borland in the Registry and I eliminated them. I also deleted
the Borland section in Program Files. I then installed from the original
CD, rebooted and registered. I was able to enter the Delphi IDE. All
looked good. But when I exited all programs, then tried to run the update,
the update was unpacked, there were a few initial steps indicating that an
update would take place, and then the process ended and no update occured.
So I am fully stuck, unable to go forward and unable to go backward.
Isn't there anything in this clean example which calls to your attention?
Isn't there any guidance you can provide or suggestions you can make?
Thank you!

In addition, I reviewed a prior post about old and new file dates being a
problem (see Daniel Zimmerman 1/26/04 in this forum) but this doesn't apply
here. It didn't apply with my prior installation and it certianly doesn't
apply now with my reinstallation.

The first thing I would probably do, is get another copy
of the upgrade. It is possible that the copy you have is
in some way corrupted. (I don't know that this is the
problem - but since you have already tried uninstalling
and reinstalling Delphi, this would be the next step I
would take.)

Not any that I consider too likely, but:
1) Are you running a virus checker during the install?
2) Have you tried turning off all extraneous programs?
3) Do you have the latest updates for your version of Windows?
4) Have you tried installing the update before installing any
third party component packages?

No, the virus protection software (McAfee) was set to not start on the boot
in which update was attempted.
> 2) Have you tried turning off all extraneous programs?
Nothing else of significance that I can identify is running.
> 3) Do you have the latest updates for your version of Windows?
I may be missing some critical updates from the last 90-days or so, but
Windows updates have been performed long past the date of the Delphi update.

As mentioned, I am now trying to update after a fresh installation of
Delphi.
I tried to update on the boot immediately after registration.
I have not yet installed any 3rd party products.
I try to not burden a forum like this.
However, this seems like a very unusual behavior and I don't know how to
navigate my way out.
It also stops me from using Delphi here and that's a major irritation.
Thanks for your concern.
Might there be any more ideas?
Does this help at all?

Afraid not. Sorry about that. :-(

You quoted my message where I described how I already read the linked
information and how it didn't help.

She said she encountered a similar situation even though her account had
full administrative privileges.
My account also had full administrative privileges in all that I described
here,
but when I logged in specifically as Administrator the installation went
through to completion.
Perhaps there is something in the Registry associated with the ID I was
using which got in the way of installation.
Logging in as Administrator may have given me a fresh start.
The alternative is that the update is keyed to the "Administrator" account,
which would seem awfully bizarre.
I thank everyone for their attempts, and Michele for being right on target
and for sharing.
I also appreciate that Borland makes these newsgroups available.

Excellent. I'm glad someone had the answer.

Well, I found that (in my experience and conclusions) at least Delphi6
Update 2 suffers from same
error as the BDE (it thinks it has run out of space if hitting a 4 gig
boundary):
