I have an application that uses the TMediaPlayer. I use it to allow the
user to view MPEGs. On some Win98 machines (most, actually), I seem to be
getting an error "NO MCI DEVICE OPEN." But this does not happen on a Win2000
machine, or on my Win98 machines that I use for testing.

Can anyone help me put an end to this mystery???

Thanks!!!!!!

If I'm not mistaken, the TMediaPlayer functionality is dependent on the MS Media
Player drivers that are installed. So the same functionality may not be
available on every machine.

Thanks!

Which drivers are you referring to and how might I go about checking for
them?

I have two Win98 machines that are working, and a bunch that are not. I
tried looking for differences in the registries of each machine, but that
just about made me jump off the roof!!!!!

I dont know the driver names but you can start by looking at the MS Media Player
version number. Also, Check if the format is supported by MS MP.

Ok, this one is driving me NUTS!!!!

If you double-click on the MPG file from MS Explorer, the file plays just
fine. But if you try to play it from TMediaPlayer inside Delphi, you get

"MMSYSTEM263 This is not a registered MCI device."

Could the user have uninstalled something or not installed something
initially that would cause this to happen?

I desparately need to fix this and I am at wits end.

Any and all help is appreciated.

This probably isn't the best solution but try downloading/installing the latest
MS MPlayer.

Also, is the DeviceType set to 'dtAutoSelect'?

Yes, set to dtAutoSelect.

I will take a stab at this and let you know. Thanks for your input in this
crazy issue.

I had the same problem(s)/ Error message , when i tested my application that
plays mpeg on different machines.
1. The MPEG was named Test.avi >>> I had to rename it to Test.mpg
2. my Subroutine, which results the path to the mpg has an error:
e.g: C:\\myDir\ >> win2K can handle the double backslash, but Win98
cannot.
3. I burned the application on a cd and i run it over then network (CD in
another computer - the cd-drive is "free" over the network (sorry for
translation))
>> same Error, no soultion, I think its the same as in no.2.

PS: I also posted some questions in delphi.multimedia concerning TMediPlayer
(fullscreen / Version of WMP..)

Thank you for the post.

1. All the files I am dealing with are MPG.
2. I have doubled checked and made sure that this is not a problem. The
problems I am having are with different Win98 machines; some work, some
don't. Win2000 works all the time.
3. Haven't tried this.

I will follow up on the delphi.multimedia group.

If any one in this group has more information, your help would be greatly
appreciated.
