I am looking for a delphi component to read Excel files. I have a strong
preference for a pure VCL solution (or maybe small DLL files).

Any suggestion?

P.S. I have tried TXLSReadWrite, but, unless its author can fix existing
problems and limitations, this component is not good enough for me.

Unfortunately, it is only compatible with D5 or D6 and the application in
which I want to add this was written in D3 (can't move it now to D6).

Any other suggestion?

Normand

Just impossible. The internal structure of an Excel file is never
published by MS. The new versions do not use a plain file format
anymore, but OLE structured storage. So you need OLE to get
to the single blocks which build the Excel file.

The last single file solution was the BIFF format, but each version
which supports VBA uses structured storage.

You shouldn't bother, Excel is now so highly ole driven that you need a good
ocx/vcl to read/write. Use the
components from Scalabium (http://www.scalabium.com/) SMExport and SMImport.
they are bullet-proof.

Is one, there are also some on www.torry.net and www.delphipages.com

I seen, but never got a chance to do it, you can read from an excel file
using ADO.

I know of a VB programmer who has done this with VB, so I assume that you
can do it with Delphi.

Check my SMImport suite. There you'll find TSMImportFromXLS component which
allow to read xls-workbook without installed MS Excel application

There published component for data loading into Dataset but internal engine
allow to load a data into any control (TStringGrid, for example)

This is only a part of thruth. Format of Excel 97 is published in MSDN a few
years ago but later these topics were extracted from MSDN...

But rest is a truth - Excel workbook (and Word dcoument) is a set of blocks
in OLE storage (starting from MS Excel 4).
