Using OLE automation to create .XLS files in a Delphi IntraWeb project does
not appear to work when running the DLL on a server that does not have Excel
loaded on it.

VB Script currently appears to be creating Excel and Word files using Active
X to get around
this.

Is there a workaround for Delphi that will allow Excel files to be created
natively, programmatically without requiring Excel to be loaded on the
system? Is there a RAVE plugin for Delphi7 that will create .XLS files?

joseph,

<<Is there a RAVE plugin for Delphi7 that will create .XLS files?>>

You can save Rave reports to PDF, HTML, RTF, Excel, Text, GIF, JPEG, BMP,
EMF and WMF, from your existing and future reports:

I downloaded the RaveRender Demo and haven't been able to get it to work
yet.
My Delphi7 is loaded in my 'DevApps' folder not 'Program Files' as default,
would this cause any trouble with the Demo?

joseph,

sorry, but I don't know the demo version. I use the full version without any
problems.

Hello Joseph,

I would recommend eDocEngine at this point. It can export to .xls (again
does not require Excel to be installed) and many more formats. Also,
installation of eDocEngine should not be a problem as the export interface
of eDocEngine compiles on your machine.

You can get eDocEngine here:

Let us know if you need assistance.

Did the full version come with source code so it could be compiled on the
system in question?

Yes the registered version of eDocEngine comes with source code so you can
compile it on the system in question. And with eDocEngine you can even
compile the report exporting interfaces in the *trial* version.

I don't see the advantage to eDoc over RaveRender.
In combination with RAVE, RaveRender does basically the same as eDoc, and
the price of eDoc is too high. However I like the streaming feature. If the
professional version allowed save to zipped versions of all its associated
file types, a visual interface for templates and streaming directly to web
users (IW compatibility). It would probably be worth $249 and sell very well
at that price with additional copies for $99 (many of your developers would
become distributors at that point).

Thank You.

Hello Girish,

By the way your eDoc has really nice graphic capability when compared to
some of the other software I've seen.

PS. Did you ever work for Microsoft?

Thank you. It has evolved a bit. There are newer areas we want to address
now and we are working on it.

:-)). Not really ;)

Although RaveRender has the basic functionality of eDocEngine, they are
definitely not the same. Simply the way eDocEngine works itself is different
and you'll notice it if you look deeper. What's more, it is different where
it's important. Here are some of feature you want to look into:

First related to Rave Exporting (these are NOT part of RaveRender):

* Vector Chart and Metafile rendering ensures sharp scalable
graphics in the generated PDF, RTF or other supported format. Also
ensures files are extremely compact and easy to distribute.

* RichText is rendered as RichText (not image) in all document formats
ensuring crisp documents that can be text searched and scaled without
loss of quality.

* Advanced features for PDF output include, compression, encryption,
TrueType fonts, font embedding, font sub-setting, international
characters (European, Chinese, Japanese...), bookmarks, notes
annotations and more.

* Intelligent cell formatting in Excel and all spreadsheet formats
enables values to be encoded in the correct format, automatically.

* End-user configuration through *customizable* dialogs.

* SPEED, SPEED, SPEED. eDocEngine is at least 10 times faster.

Key features for generic stand-alone document creation include:

* PDF AcroForms support enables you to design richly formatted PDF
forms with support for buttons, checkboxes, lists, edit controls,
JavaScript actions and more.

* Generic engine gives full control to create any kind of document
and add custom content to each page after it has been saved.

* Advanced drawing functions include support for drawing tables,
paragraphs and textboxes with a single method call.

* Paragraph control enables automatic multi-line text alignment to
left, right, center or justify.

* Header and Footer control.

* High-speed rendering of metafiles and commands.

As for the price, we've heard from many people that for what it offers, it
is priced very competitively.

Please do let us know if you have further questions.
