I'm also having some problems due to changes in the contents of the system
libraries.
Are there any guides as to what to look for when making this conversion?

I don't understand above statement.
I use D7 almost every day and D5 about once a week.
In my uses, I have not realized that D7 is "vastly superior."

Because D7 is vastly superior IDE than D5? If you don't know this, then
you haven't used D7 enough.
And now are the last days to buy the old IDEs if one doesn't want to
move to D2005.

Maybe it depends like everything on which bits you use most?
Well, at least much better.

Well I'm moving back to D5 for "legal reasons", I was using my company's D7
Pro, they don't complain (only used by me)
but now I am not doing much work for myself and I am using my D5 Pro
personal copy.
That means I am going back one step (never used D6 though the company bought
me D6 Enterprise), so I'm exactly at the point
where you find what you've won with the upgrade and lost :)
I find that D7 is a better D5, that's something good to say. There is not a
single feature missing in D5 so far that makes me stop
working except perhaps for the TClientDataset being present in D7 Pro and
not in D5 Pro... I'll have to get a free replacement
or some work around (JVCL has some memory dataset I saw). For ADO, I have
the very hard to find ADOExpress add-on
so I can get along. Anyway these days I'm doing more work with IBX/FB so no
problem there.
I'm missing many of the date functions present in DateUtils in D7, but I
think they must be somewhere in some JCL library (I
am sure JEDI provided them).
That ntdll stuff that affected the debugging in WIN2000 is something I'll
have to solve (there is fix somewhere IIRC), but apart
from that I will survive...
All this said if I had D7 Pro of my own, I wouldn't come back. D7 is great,
great stuff. Love it.

That is a fine question, one that I had to think about.
I've been using Delphi5 since it was released. I didn't see a need to
upgrade to Delphi 6 when it came out. I didn't see a need / didn't have
time to upgrade to Delphi 7 when it came out.
Then Delphi 8 came out, and I realized I was three versions and like 5 years
behind. I got an offer for Delphi 8 bundled with Delphi 7, so I spent the
$1500 and upgraded.
I figured I would preview where Delphi is heading, while upgrading to Delphi
7 to get some real work done. Unfortunately, it seems I stayed too long in
D5 land, as some of the makers of components that I use seem to have gone
AWOL. Luckily I have source for the components, but not alot of time to
figure out the changes between D5 and D7 to get them to work.
I don't think that I can justify a purchase of D9 at this time, as I haven't
made use of D7/D8 yet. If I can get up and running on D7, I will only be
two versions out of date rather than my current 4 <g>.
