The University of Chicago Scavenger Hunt (or Scav Hunt, colloquially Scav) is an annual four-day team-based scavenger hunt held at the University of Chicago from Thursday to Sunday of Mother's Day weekend in May. The list of items, usually over 300 items long, encompasses cryptograms, competitions, build challenges, a 3 course meal, and a 2,000-mile (3,200 km) road trip. "Scav Hunt" is well known for its quirky, strange, and impossible items.[1] Scav held the Guinness World Record for largest scavenger hunt from 2011 to 2014.[2]

After the official rules, a list of qualifying factors for the road trip portion of the scavenger hunt is included. These qualifying factors have been included in the list at the behest of UChicago's Center for Leadership and Involvement (the governing body for registered student organizations) since 2006.[11] The road trip, itself, though, has been a part of the Hunt since 1991.[14]

Previously, this event took the form of a large party held on the main quads attended by scavenger hunt participants and nonparticipants alike.[21] Usually, this party involved a theme. Each team would design their own section of the party with drinks and attire adhering to this theme.

The Scav Hunt formerly held the Guinness World Record for largest scavenger hunt.[2] To obtain the record, the Judges organized a miniature scavenger hunt during the 2011 Hunt.[35] The smaller event was required to meet the Guinness World Record definition of a scavenger hunt. The Scav Hunt has since been officially surpassed for the title of the world's largest scavenger hunt by "Passport to Provo," an event organized by Provo and Google.[2]

Thank you all who came out for the 2nd Annual Festival. It was so fun to see everyone enjoying themselves, kids and families running around intently doing the scavenger hunt and lots of people discovering that the apple you choose does make a definite difference in the taste of your applesauce. I think the hit of the festival was the Gator rides. The kids really loved it.

Thanks to all that were able to come to the Apple Festival on Saturday!! You all made it great fun. We loved all the enthusiasm for the scavenger hunt and Gator rides! And it was fun to hear the opinions of the differences of likes in the applesauce flavors. The Melrose apple seemed to stand out as the winner in the apple taste test this year and it was all over the board for a favorite in the applesauce.

Co-curricular Engagement Co-ordinator Christine Richard said the scavenger hunt will allow students to access valuable resources that support students in their academics, wellness, safety and student finances as they explore the campus.

July 9 activities start with a color run and end with a street dance. Other events throughout the day include: craft fair, wiffle ball tournament, scavenger hunt, chalk art contest, beer garden, washer tournament, bounce houses, kiddie tractor pull

Some popular ideas are doing scavenger challenges, photo or video montages around the city you live in, creating a list of things for kids to find around the house (using colors or descriptive words), a nature scavenger hunt, a virtual scavenger hunt, and hunts that have themes, such as Christmas, Easter, or Halloween themes.

There are friendly, competitive scavenger hunt tours that are available in some cities, that include a guide, and interesting facts about your city you may never have known before. This is also an excellent date night idea!
