I've got D2007 on my workstation and think it's great.

In addition, I've got D2006 on my laptop, but as it is somewhat challenged
in the processor power and memory departpment, I would prefer to ditch it
for the leaner, slicker Delphi 7. Does anyone know a good place to buy
Delphi 7?

I've looked on eBay and the only seller with a copy is asking £129 for D7
Personal, which sounds like a real rip-off to me.

Can anyone recommend a good place to buy secondhand software?

Or does anyone wish to do a straight swap - my D2006 for your D7?

Steve

If you need it just for development, there is a personal (non-comm.
license) version here:

http://www.borland.pl/downloads/delphi_7_personal/Delphi7_Personal.zip

then you can compile your final version in D2007. That's what I do.

I recently sold my copy of Delphi 7 Pro on eBay for nearly £300.

Getting hold of a legal copy is becoming more and more difficult, hence the
high prices.

Actually, I've still got D5.

What improvements were there from D5 to D7? Is there a list of them
somewhere?

Steve

(PS: I'm damn sure Codegear could make some money simply by releasing D7
again. Presumably it'll be archived somewhere).

A couple of years ago , I've suggested releasing a Delphi Classic version
based on the D7 source code, but that wasn't recieved well...

It would basically just be Delphi 7 plus bug fixes. I guess Pierre's memory
manager would also add value at no cost to CodeGear as well. I'd like to
see a version of that with no 3rd Party Components to speak of (we would add
our own).

I think a Delphi Classic IDE with the ability to easily extend the IDE would
also be welcome. In this way, the Delphi IDE really could be the coral reef
sustaining a developer community for as long as there is one....

Delphi Classic should come in one SKU: Professional and be priced at $499...
And it should be permanently available to the Codegear customer base. This
should in no way interfere with Codegear's other Delphi IDE Studio product
which (honestly) is a damned good product, as well.

Talk amongst yourselves...

If you are comfortable with D5 and have or can get any 3rd Party components
that you need for it; then I say try it. I found I could easily work around
the (very few) bugs (that I encountered) in D5 to get my work done. As I
recall, the main reason why I upgraded to D7 was Bold and Kylix (I bought
the Architect version).

D5 loads and compiles very quickly. It was a joy to work with.

Unfortunately most tools and components packages are only compatible back to
Delphi 6. That's a show stopper for me.

I seem to remember that Delphi 7 personal could be downloaded free from
Borland Poland. Don't know whether this is still the case. It was the
English version.

Steve, you may want to experiment a little before reverting back to D7.
It's entirely possible that you would be pleasantly surprised at how
nimble you can make D2006. I have TD2006 Pro and have tweaked it a bit
to run very light most of the time and load just what I want. A few
links:

DelphiSpeedUp IDE plugin - *Free*
http://andy.jgknet.de/dspeedup/

Delphi Startup Times and the Kitchen Sink
http://homepages.codegear.com/medington/DelphiStartupTimes.htm

Delphi Package Selector v.1.10 - *Free*
http://www.torry.net/pages.php?id=489

Delphi Configuration Manager - not free, looks like more options
though...
http://www.jed-software.com/dcm_screen.htm

Basically, through the registry or by using one of the
package/configuration apps listed above, create a baseline no frills
setup, and add what you want, when you want by disabling:

* .NET Core IDE Package
* delphidotnetcore100.bpl
* Borland Together IDE Integration
* startpageideX.bpl
* todoideX.bpl
* any other 3rd Party packages that you could delegate for per session
use

Actually I have the opposite impression. I'm still on Delphi 5 (although I'm planning to upgrade
soon) and use a lot of 3rd party stuff and the only things I've run into that don't support Delphi 5
are the RemObjects stuff (granted that's a pretty big loss if you can spend that kind of money).
DevExpress, TMS, ElPack, LMD, ModelMaker, Nexus etc all support Delphi 5.

Typically the components compile and work perfectly but the demos often need a bit of tweaking --
usually it involves deleting the Variants unit from the uses bit. Some tools even work better on
Delphi 5 than they do on the latest version -- CnPack for example has a lot of really useful tools
for forms that work on D5-7 but not on later versions.

Delphi 5 works great, hence my delay in upgrading. The main things that are inducing me to
upgrading are:

The structure view of visual controls (introduced in Delphi 6)
The recent debugger enhancements
The ability to use .net from time to time -- obviously not a big deal for me or I would have
upgraded earlier, but still it would be nice for web pages
RemObjects stuff
Generally feeling like an old fart using the 1950s technology (but it still works great)

Bob,

That's extremely helpful, and certainly food for thought - thank you very
much.

It used to be the practice for UK PC Plus magazine to put an older version
of Delphi on it cover disk, licensed for free unlimited personal use, no
redistribution of executables. However having this version did entitle you
to purchase the current version at the upgrade price, usually given
prominent coverage in the mag.

I think that's a great idea.
I'm still using Delphi 5 ( I'm ashamed. 1999 technology. :-) ).
I would like to upgrade to Delphi 7 because it was, according to many
Delphi fans, Borland's last great Delphi release.

I think Codegear should offer past version of Delphi.
I think they are really missing out on some important revenue streams.
Did it ever dawn on the folks at CodeGear that people
would like to buy past versions of Delphi for legacy support?

I don't think they should get "cute" with the price either.
Make the price reasonable, so that people have confidence in CodeGear's
products.
Think Win-Win CodeGear.
Don't pissed your customer's off by "forcing" them to upgrade.
