Sorry for cross-posting, but in public.install.delphi isn't very much
traffic...
It's this time of the year again, when I switch hardware and have to
re-install everything...

My Delphi 6 is installed so far (and has run) but now refuses to do so until
it is registered. So I went the registration path again. After activating
online, I get a message window that says"Your software has been successfully
registered". Fine. When I click "Exit" (the only button in that window), I
get another window that tells me that the registration failed. "Click
Register or Exit" it says... which takes me back to step 1.

Yes, that's funny. Exactly what I need today. Love Borland for this one...

I tried several ways - registration through direct server connection fails,
registration over the web fails, registration over the phone: local phone
number doesn't exist... registration over the Irish phone number: occupied
all the time.

I remember that I had the same troubles last time and it helped to delete a
folder and/or some registry entries. But I don't remember the exact
procedure. Does anybody have a clue how to complete the registration and
make Delphi 6
run?

In your "C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\.borland" directory delete the
two files that you have there (Borland.lic & registry.dat).
That should do it if I remember right.

Thanks, I tried that in the meantime. There is a "registry.dat" and a
"registry.slm", but no "Borland.lic". Deleting the files or the folder
doesn't help, it just un-registers Delphi 7... My user account has
administrator privilegs, by the way, and I'm running XP. When I delete the
files and register Delphi 6, the files are NOT re-created. This obviously
comes from the D7 registration.

Anyway...
After one or two dozen registration attempts I at least get a DIFFERENT
message now. It says: "Error registering software. The limit has been
reached for installs using this serial number, please contact customer
service to increase the allowed install count." Limit of unsuccessful
activations, huh?

Ok... "Customer Service", whoever you are and however you can be contacted,
please respond. Remove NOSPAM from my email address.

Hmm that is true that it could be for D7. I had the same problem for a year
ago or so. But could'nt remember if that was for D6 or D7.

About the other problem with the Limit. I've also tried that for around two
years ago. Just contact Borland support and they can help you out of the
problem. but you will proberly need to have your reg. information ready. and
they will reach the limit I think that was with 3.

All phone numbers are available if you choose to register via phone.

If all else fails, 831-431-1000.

Thanks, I'll delete them and try again as soon as I get the serial number
extension.

That's very bad.

Sorry to correct you. None of the European phone numbers work. Not even that
number in the Netherlands with the +31 prefix (always busy). Just the US
number is fine. I called it in the meantime. When we went through the
registration process on the phone (number of trials extended), it failed
again. Not very much a surprise, however. I did not want to discuss this
with a setup technician on a long-distance call.

So, while waiting for a new serial number extension from Karen, there is
still the problem that the activation fails (if the extension allows to
activate it at all). It doesn't help to remove the C:\Documents and
Settings\User Name\.borland folder. The folder is not even re-created (I
guess it should be when the registration says it's ok).

I found a suspicious file called "qtintf70.dll" in Delphi 7, which I also
ported to the new computer. The registration of D7 didn't work unless this
file was present. Should there be a "qtintf60.dll" anywhere?

This was the key I was looking for. Deleting the entries and the folder (and
Karen's extension) solved the problem.
Thanks for your help!

No problem. I'll let Karen know as well.
