IMNSHO, the best, fastest, easiest to use differ / merger around on any
platform.

Agreed, I started using this about 3 months ago and love it.

So did I (on Stefan's recommendation) and it is easily the best such tool
I've ever used.
Mike Orriss (TeamB and DevExpress)
I use it about 5-6 times a week. In less than one week it saves me enough
billable time to more than pay for it.
I don't think it's "through the roof", but I use BeyondCompare now, and am
pleased with it, and it's much less money, IIRC.
Bill
>How can you guys love this when I think the price is trough the roof for such
>kind of utility?
It's simply worth it.
It allows me to do things I couldn't do easily otherwise.
The price is peanuts compared with my billable time.
Take, for example, the situation where I have three directories D1, D1A and D2.
D1 contains the source files of version 1 of a thirdparty component, D1A
contains my updated files and D2 contains the latest version.
I can do a directory compare of D1 and D1A, producing an automatic set of
comparisons of changed files. The three way comparison merge then lets me see,
at a glance, my changes between D1 and D1A and I can apply, on a change by
change basis, those changes to D2.
Also, I have Araxis Merge set up as a Delphi tool so that it automatically
displays the differences between the current PAS file and its associated ~PAS.
The latest upgrade supports automatic merging, but I haven't had time to get to
grips with it yet.
Thanks Mike, for the info about the http://www.araxis.com/ compare
and merge program. Will it show DFM file sources? AFAIK,
BeyondCompare (http://www.scootersoftware.com/) only does two
directories or files at a time, but it will show source and allow
merging DFM file sources. BC is US$30. Regards, JohnH (I think that
this thread should be in thirdparty-tools.)
Yup, second that - plus AFAIK it's the only one that can handle
UNICODE - which is essential for me. Actually it can even compare an
ANSI file to a UNICODE one - pretty cool!

Thanks
I saw that in 3rd party. Because I was not looking for a Delphi component I
asked here. I did a quick search for it in google and a couple other sites,
and could not find it.

Comes up first searching on BeyondCompare and File Comparison. It pays to
be specific <g>
Andy
Let me add that Tim Thousand is one of the most responsive and cooperative
authors with which I've ever dealt. (What that means is that he incorporated a
couple of my ideas early on<g>)
Well, I can say exactly the same about Jason Shannon, one of the
author's of Araxis Merge :->
didn't say he wasn't. Just haven't used it much. Had an aversion to it because
I was ordered to use it at one point. ;-)>
Does that mean that you guys accepted a free copy -- not that you
didn't deserve it? But could the pride of invention or getting
something free, color your opinions? Regards, JohnH
>Does that mean that you guys accepted a free copy -- not that you
>didn't deserve it?
As a customer, I consider it important to provide qualified feedback and
request enhancement - because that only will do *me* good, selfish as I
am.
So whenever I find a tool *I like*, I begin providing feedback - Araxis
Merge, NASM, TortoiseCVS, GExperts, Winzip, ...
In the case of Araxis Merge, I was given a licence key - and this is by
no means the only tool where through providing qualified and quality
feedback I obtained a licence key. IOW, I did not spend money on my
licence, but I spent an awful lot of time on it.
>But could the pride of invention or getting
>something free, color your opinions?
It could, but it does not. I refuse to use what I consider to be
sub-standard tools, so *my* only option *is* Araxis Merge. If there was
a better tool around than Araxis Merge - I would jump to it as soon as
possible.
But there is no better, faster, easier to use differ / merger around
than Araxis Merge.
And now, having tried the trial version of Araxis Merge, I see little reason
to change. Some of the UI design in Merge feels awkward to me, and I've not
(yet) had occasion to do a 3-way comparison. I will keep trying it through
my 30 day eval term, but so far, I prefer BeyondCompare.
Bill
I am a paid, registered user of BeyondCompare. It serves my needs and, as I
said, I have an irrational bias against Araxis
I am also a paid registered user of BeyondCompare and have used it quite
a lot. I tried Araxis Merge, and it is really good. But too expensive for
a hobbyist like me, who doesn't need it that often (I can do with
BeyondCompare for my needs). It would be different if I were doing this
for money. I'd not hesitate to buy it.
