All links on that page refer to
http://www.borland.com/products/downloads/download_delphi.html#
so basically nothing changes when I click on Updates link.
Am I missing something?
I can see the article, but I don't see the update listed in the "Delphi 6
Registered Users Updates" page.

Yes, a javascript popup.

I don't see it, either.All I see is RTL update 2.

Don't see the files on the FTP site, and since you guys subscribe to
"security through obscurity", I can't do a simple 'ls' on the server to see
if the file has some name not matching the convention used in RTL2.
You (Borland) might want to consider integrating our sign-up/registration
names with your FTP software to allow for authenticated logins so we can do
directory queries and whatnot (plus sometimes it's nice to browse an FTP
directory rather than wade through download links, etc).

I can get to the "Delphi 6 Registered Users Updates" page, but don't see
any RTL Update Pack 3. 2 seems to be the highest.
Wazzup?

Ah, thanks, had disabled popups.
Sorry for the false alarm.
I don't think the file is there. The download address for RTL2 Pro update
is
ftp://ftpd.borland.com/devsupport/delphi/d6/variant_patch/english/professional/del6_pro_rtl2.exe,
so I tried
ftp://ftpd.borland.com/devsupport/delphi/d6/variant_patch/english/professional/del6_pro_rtl3.exe
but got an FTP error saying that file isn't there.

Seconded.

Weird. I saw it when I wrote the article. Hmm. Maybe I was still looking
at the staging server by mistake. Anyway, I'll get it fixed. Thanks.
Please, let's keep the language clean, ok? ;)
Yes, if you would like the updates to be delayed by at least a month.
Please remember posting direct links to the FTP server is bad, bad, bad. It
tries to bypass their registration scheme, and bypasses the round-robin load
balancing thingy.

I trust your estimate, but must say I am surprised that it should
involve that much efforts, even one man in one month seems to be
much more than I can imagine for such a task.
What I suggested was one setup.exe with all, absolutely all files
that have changed / been added /been moved /been removed since
DX was released.
Then the installer would overwrite, add, move or delete as appropriate.
Since there is no doubt about what the original DX contained, and
since there is no doubt about what the newest DX contains, it should
be pretty basic. Windows updates do it.
Prompt the user to accept that changes will take place, and ask her to
make a backup of the Delphi folders.
Then voila!
Working with several tools, development environments, utilities etc.,
that all have upgrades, service packs, patches - I personally want
to do it the idiot-proof way, my head is filled with enough else
to keep a record of what has been patched or not and what setup files
have been run in which order...

I can see it now. Thank you!
Maybe you don't understand how much regression testing it would involve.

A full certification of every single IDE SKU would be required.
I think everyone would like a 3rd formal update to Delphi 6.
Understanding the cost might help us put it into perspective.

Everyone would probably like free ice cream for life, too. <g>
There are costs associated.
> Understanding the cost might help us put it into perspective.
It would delay Delphi 8 or reduce the amount of R&D work for Delphi 8,
reduce the bug fix work for Delphi 8, reduce the amount of features for
Delphi 8, reduce the amount of work done on any fixes for Delphi 7, ...
should I go on?

Please don't.
All you are saying is that Delphi 6 users will be left to
twist in the wind. Just because we don't immediately jump to
the next release doesn't mean that we should be left out in the
cold in defference to Borland spending its resources on a
new product that will, in turn, have bugs.
Oz
On what is the "in defference" assertion based?
> that will, in turn, have bugs.
I doubt that any product as complex as Delphi is bug free.

I know it's frustrating to have people keep asking about updates to the
previous version but, conspiracy theories aside, these are fair questions.
Personally, I don't mind not having a third service pack for Delphi 6.
Mind you, I wouldn't mind both RTL patches being rolled into one and
being self-installable rather than having to manually copy 7 files into
5 different directories. I think that's reasonable, and I'd be
surprised if that would delay the update by a month.
Hopefully constructive criticism.

I consider it such.
