I've got a question about getting information about ECO and BOLD and other
Borland and CodeGear products and technologies.
It seems to me that the marketing policy of these companies leaves much to
be desired.
For example, where can I get a help about BOLD?
Several months ago I used a Link to page on CodeGear site, where all BOLD
components were described. This link does not work anymore. And simple
search with key "+BOLD" on codegear.com shows everything except of what is
expected.
Is BOLD a secret? Or you do not want to support it? In this case you should
clearly explain to everybody who search BOLD that ECO is much better (if it
is).
There very little information in the world about ECO too. Sometimes it seems
to me that you develop your product for your own use, for your own proud.
May be the reason is that I leave in post-USSR and your marketing policy
does not excpect any interest here? I can only guess.
I like Delphi. But sometimes I learn about something new only by chance. It
was such with BOLD, when I luckily found the site mda-delphi.ru. It was a
sort of water for starving in the desert I would say. I have specially
checked the developer's web site at that time. There were no informatin
about BOLD there, despite the fact that on mda-delphi.ru there were tens of
thousand messages.
And mda-delphi.ru does not exist any more. That was the end, because it was
a single source of information and help.
Moreover, there a lot of books about Microsoft products for developers. And
fiew books about delphi on a market. And no opportunities to order them in
English from abroad.
May be there are a lot of information somewhere. But seems to be discrete
and not easy to get, even on the developer's website.
For example, it would be very convenient to have an opportunity to download
help file for RAD studio to read it before downloading all the studio. Or at
least detailed description of its features. I think that four screenshots of
main window is much less than enough for even usual student essay at the
university. But Codegear represents RAD in such way... I cannot understand
this.
3drail would possibly be very interesting product too, but I learned about
it only from web site of Codegear, no somewhere else in the Internet. And
Delphi for PHP too.
I would ask other programmers to share their opinion.
As far as *I know* BOLD is not supported anymore.
So there's no much choise with it.
In my opinion it should be released under one of Open-Source licenses.
I believe you can find the docs on the CD with Bold (if you have such).
It was similar to online one.
About the mda-delphi.ru.
It was really helpful resource. But honestly saying I didn't use it often.
I find reading blogs and participating in Newsgroups more helpful.
I believe you still can find some info about BOLD on the net.
I just googled a bit and found this doc: http://www.viewpointsa.com/bold_resources/getting_started_with_bold/files/Starting_Bfd_Part1_r1.0.pdf
This one is like an online book (I haven't even seen it before) which look
very, very good and contains many parts.
But it is only in Russian. (I don't think it's aproblem for you):
http://www.interface.ru/home.asp?artId=1744
Also there is a very good book about BOLD and is MUST-HAVE one. If don't
have it yet, buy it just now!
As far as I know it was not event available in English (I might be wrong):
http://www.books.ru/shop/books/191741
Author: Gribachev.
Year: 2004.
Publisher: Piter.
ISBN: 5-469-00185-7
also look for more info on the net.
You can ask in the Newgroups if there's something special, but you will probably
not find lots of help on BOLD because of most of people are already on ECO.
So I think your problem with lack of information about BOLD can be solved
(not maybe for 100%, but at least for ~70%).
But you still have a problem with unsupported product.
If you have a choise, I would recommend to move to .NET and ECO.
If you still have to develop Win32 applications you should refill yourself
with energy and patience and take the old good bold.
Hope I was of your help.

I have already watched the video about RAD2007 and ECO4.
Obviously ECO is more improved than BOLD.
I hope I'll be able to use RAD soon. Demo has already been downloaded :))

But you'll have to learn .NET Framework too, if don't know it yet :-)
You should also read EcoServices book from Peter Morris.
It is a great one.

Also decide to buy a book from Alois Schmid.

No, currently in Australia.

I hadn't. I downloaded it when it was in the preview stage or something like
that.
It was about a year ago.
I'll look for it somewhere else.
Thanks for links and information.
Dmitry.
I purchased the book and found it ok.
It's about 300+ pages. There were a few chapters that revolved around
Rational Rose that are somewhat useless if you don't have it (RR).
I used it in conjunction with Anthony Richardson's 3 tutorials.
And a LOT of trial and error...
