I've just bought Delphi 5 poressional and it does not have a serial port
component.
Does anyone know how to get a serial port component for Delphi5 ?
Thank you very much in advance.

It was not specifically for D5 but it works for me.

Thanks, John. But I was looking for a guaranteed, not freeware, not
shareware component. I would be not worried if I had to buy it. Do you
know if Borland offers anyone ?
Thank you very much in advance again!

... little spendy, though @ $350.

Freeware serial port components, CPORT252.ZIP is available at:
http://www2.arnes.si/~sopecrni/
The primary author is Dejan Crnila. I added the C++ Builder support
for it.
I happen to also own TurboPower's AsyncPro. Make no mistake, AsyncPro
is a far, far heftier package with many more features. In fact, I
have a recent project that uses AsyncPro's Pager components. CPort
doesn't have anything like that. CPort is primarily a basic port
send/receive characters component. It does have a port LED component
though.
The reason I got involved with CPort even though I own AysncPro is
that TurboPower's product has no basic "ReceiveChars" type of method.
They insist you sent up triggers and event. When doing
protocol-oriented work, this is far less readable and maintainable,
IMO of course.
In the Win16 API, it was very much required that you do event-oriented
programming. In the Win32 API, MS added the WaitCommEvent API call,
which allows for more procedural-oriented serial I/O code. But
TurboPower's components seem to now allow that kind of coding.
Frankly, I would have just rolled my own library if I didn't come
across CPort. But since I did, I like it and use it. So for me, I
consider both products useful. But I more often do protocol work, so
for me, CPort is the tool I use more often.
