Way back when I was using Delphi 1, I knew how to use "save as"
to save another version of the component palette, which could
then be recalled at will. But what with packages and all these
days, I'm not sure how to accomplish this any more.

Surely there's someone else who would like to have a "lean and
mean" component palette with just the components one needs and
trusts, leaving most of the experimental third-party components
somewhere else, and calling them up when desired?

Is there a way to do that? I've flipped through books and searched
newsgroup archives, but seen no mention of how to do this.

As you say, the component palette is now really a bunch of separate packages
that are all loaded separately. What you might want to do is go into
Component|Install Packages and uncheck or remove everything that you're not
interested in. Not only with this declutter things but also cause the IDE
to load faster.

Mike,

This may not be exectly the solution you're looking for, I'm not
sure. Nonetheless, it's a nice tip. If you're worried about
losing your palette settings, etc. after spending so much time
getting them "just right" try this:

Run regedit, then go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Borland\Delphi\Your Version\Palette

Now choose Registry | Export Registry File.

Pick a name you like and you'll get a .REG file with your palette
keys which you can put away for disaster recovery. If your
computer ever crashes and you must reinstall Delphi from scratch,
you can do so, then come back and do Registry | Import Registry
File. Hopefully you'll never need this though.

BTW, same thing works for your toolbar settings:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Borland\Delphi\4.0\Toolbars

So, if I can do that, can I write a simple program that will
change the registry key when I wish? So that I could choose to
load Delphi either with all the components that came with
Enterprise, or "lean and mean" with only those I use most often,
or with some added third-party components I'm expermenting with,
but don't completely trust?

And, if that can be done, has someone already done it and made
it available?
