MSSQL Cannot locate or connect to SQL Server

Using the BDEAdmin, when I try to connect via a MSSQL alias to a MSSQL7
server I get the error "Cannot locate or connect to SQL Server. Unable to
connect: SQL server is unavailable or does not exist." I can ping this
server successfully, however.

On two workstations on the WAN, I am able to connect via BDE (one is an NT
workstation, the other is a Win 98). On all other workstations I get this
error. All workstations have TCP/IP services and appear to be setup alike.
The only difference appears to be that I installed the MSSQL client
Enterprise Manager on the two workstations that are able to connect thru the
BDE. All workstations have the same registry entries.

When I click on the drop down list for SERVER NAME in the BDE Admin Alias
manager, the list is blank for the workstations that fail to connect, on the
ones that connect, the server name(s) are listed. Is there a configuration
table or file that lists all of the available servers (like HOSTS)? Am I
missing a configuration file of some type?

I have a client app that works on two workstations that I need to rollout to
other users. I got the SQL Links product that came with my Delphi 5
Enterprise RAD. Is there something that I need to buy or license to rollout
my application to other users?

App: Developed in Delphi 5
Server: MS-SQL7
Middleware: BDE 5.1 SQLMSS32.DLL

I would greatly appreciate any help with this problem. Thanks in advance!

Make sure that Microsoft client service are installed on all machines and
the proper TCP/IP layers are selected or enabled. You should be able to use
the MS-SQL Network Client Utility for all your troubleshooting.

When you say "Make sure that Microsoft client service are installed " do you
mean Client for Microsoft Networks? Or do you mean the MS SQL client
utilities?

Thanks!

I have seen connection problems with SQL Server on Windows 2000
professional clients. I had to log on to the domain even if I was using SQL
Server security which is not required in Win 98.
