Hi,
I'm working with Delphi 4 and MTS, but I don't understand some concepts.

Charlie Calvert, in his excerpt from Delphi 4 Unleashed says: "If MTS
Pooling is turned on, then transactions and pooling of databases connections
will be available. If MTS Pooling is turned off, then you will have no
support for transactions."

And in the BDE Help says : "Set to TRUE to enable MTS pooling, thus
improving the initial connection time of opening a database".

Can someone tell me if it's necessary to turn on this option to have support
for transactions?.
Or is it only an option for improving performance?

Thanks in advance.

The transactions it is referring to are MTS transactions. You can still do
BDE transactions (Database1.StartTransaction/Commit) without the option
turned on.

Thanks, Josh.
I have problems with MTS-transactions and BDE.

Then, I'll repeat my question.

Can someone tell me if it's necessary to turn on the 'MTS Pooling' option to
have support for MTS transactions?

Or is it only an option for improving performance?

Thanks.

Yes, it is necessary to turn on MTS Pooling to support MTS Transactions and
connection pooling in an MTS environment (e.g. a MTS object).

The *other* way you can use this option is to turn the option on for your
normal database applications (i.e. non-MTS applications). Doing that, the
BDE will still use the MTS pooling and performance should increase
dramatically. There is a demo in D4 that demonstrates this.

Hi Stephen,

I haven't had time to look at that configuration yet either, so I don't
know. I will definitely keep you in the loop if I do get some time to look
at it.

Have you tried this with MIDAS yet?

I can get the performance boost 2-tier, but get nothing 3-tier.

I can't begin to imagine what the difference to the BDE would be, but have
not had time to pursue it.
