I am writing this request again because Borland Sales support at the
Netherlands assured me that Borland is reading these newsgroups to support
the users. Last year I did not get any reply. For the post of Alan Wright of
13/07/2001 I see no replies either...
Here is the problem:
When I alter the "DLL32" parameter in BDE Admin to 'SQLORA8.dll' & "VENDOR
INIT" to 'OCI.dll' to connect to an Oracle 8.1.7 database with a slash "/"
(= without a password) then I get the error 'ORA-01012: not logged on'.
When I use "DLL32=SQLORA32.dll" & "VENDOR INIT=oraclient8.dll"
(=undocumented) to connect to the same Oracle8 database it works to connect
with a '/'. However I get a lot of other problems (record refresh, double
records,...) because the SQLORA32.dll is not fit to be used with an Oracle8
database.
I used this technique a lot with BDE 5.1,... on a Oracle7 database. This
worked fine. My impression is that the SQLORA8.dll does not (correctly)
support this Oracle feature...?
Last year I used BDE 5.11, this time I am using Delphi 6 & BDE 5.2.0.2.
Could you please confirm this is indeed a problem (any solutions coming?) or
are there any work-arounds?
Many thanks in advance,
Hans Vervaeke.
I have given up hope of a reply from Borland and converted any remaining BDE
applications in my portfolio to use Direct Oracle Access. I can heartily
recommend this course of action.
DOA has proved to be extremely robust and seems to be much more tolerant of
version mismatches between client and server, as well as seeming to be happy
with Oracle 7 or Oracle 8.
The external authentication works fine also.
If you are a commercial organisation and need help converting applications to
use DOA I would be more than happy to oblige!

Absolutely right!

I hate to disappoint you, but the sales rep in the Netherlands
mis-informed you about the coverage in these newsgroups. Borland does not
officially offer support in any of the newsgroups outside the
borland.public.install.* groups, and those only offer free support for
installation related issues. The only support offered in these groups is
"peer support" from other users (much like yourself) who use the product
regularly...

I can not help you with your problem. My only use of Oracle does not use
any external authentication, so I have no experience in that area...

ODAC from Core Labs is better, allowing for Oracle connectivity WITHOUT any Oracle client
software.
It uses Oracle NET to connect.
10 times better than DOA

Also 10 times harder to find than DOA - I searched altavista for odac and "core labs" and
found nothing that looked like oracle/delphi software.
How well does ODAC cope with different versions of Oracle? Is there a website?
