BDE error $210C: "Trying to load multiple IDAPIxx.DLL"

I have two applications and each has its own Paradox database.
One application uses the BDE directly, the other uses it via ODBC.
Both applications run smoothly by themselves, but they cannot both be loaded
at once.
Why? Is there a solution?

Search your hard drive for IDAPI32.DLL. It sounds like you have two
different versions in different directories. There should only be one copy
of the BDE and it should be in the directory identified by the DLLPath entry
in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Borland\Database Engine in the registry.
