So the screen saver stays travelling through stars...

It is a newsreader which is used by a lot of people here.
XN = XanaNews see http://www.wilsonc.demon.co.uk/xananews.htm
There is also a bit more recent "unofficial" version:

Well it destabilizes XN 1.18.1.9 and eventually generates AVs.

Maybe the version I have is trying to animate it but uses the wrong
TGifImage version which can cause AVs.
Just looked it up...
XN is using the one from 2001.07.23 with mods by Finn Tolderlund
There is a later version (2007.01.18) available which should work
better for animated gifs: http://www.tolderlund.eu/delphi/

Ah ok, i'm using the last version Colin made, 1.18.1.6

He's probably up until his elbows in work, if not worse.
I've noticed the last 6 months for me where kinda "hell".
Normally there used to be short periods where you had to work "25"
hours a day, but for the most you had enough time to do other things.
But now, even when it is vacation time over here and with the open
support cases at an all time low, there's still so much work to do that
i sometimes forget to eat my lunch or go home on time....

You, as an intelligent person, should know that this kind information
can be easily found by using Google. I think the following page which
clearly states what Xanal means:
http://mv.lycaeum.org/anagrams/PARALINGUA.cgi?article=Xanal
The language used should be no problem for you, but I can understand
you don't have time to do the translation yourself, ask Miss
Moneypenny, she'll love to do the job for you.

Thank you for allowing me to use my imagination about what Colin is
doing at the moment. If my imagination is right, he doing an
interesting "job", hopefully he isn't deleting too much. It sounds
better than him "wasting" his time playing on-line games ;-)

Time, mostly. I guess I should just remove the references to the one in
there, use the newer version that comes with D2007 and rebuild it.

I tried that one in March but as you know an "undocumented feature"
sneaked in regarding article colors in the message tree and I went back
to 1.18.1.9.

Downloaded the whole lot from the SVN trunc and replaced GIFImage with
Finn's newer version... et voila, version 1.18.1.11 is running :)

Cool!
Do animated GIFs now work?
If so, I may have to finally break down and update to Leonel's 1.18.1.11.
I've been using 1.17.5.7 since I made a mod to it on July 10, 2005. <g>

Yes, no more crashes on OPs "animated" gif.

Ah, tried that one as well, also no crashes. The only difference is
that it does not display the gif the first time after starting XanaNews.
If you go to another post and then back, it is displayed.
Do you see the same?
"My" version with the updated GIFImage.pas displays it directly.
Just to try it out, I also made the change by replacing GIFImage with
CodeGear's GIFImg. It compiles without problems and can also display
the gif directly.

Well yes and no. It does not crash on them anymore but they are only
drawn ones, directly, so no animation.

Pieter,
Yeah,... that's the same symptom I've always had, even with TGIFImage.
I built a new XN. I'm not quite sure if I got Leonel's latest change or
not. I may have missed it by a couple of minutes. <g>
In anyevent, I'm finally off of my old 1.17.5.7 of July 10, 2005. <g> I
also made my change to the MainForm so I can read the text in its frame.
The first thing I don't care for is I can't seem to move the toolbar
buttons around. <g> Nor can I add separators.

Not in XanaNews. <g>
However, I have an app where I wanted to use an animated gif and couldn't
get it to work.

That's what I thought since Leonel went to the trouble to add what
appeared to be a full-functioning toolbar. I haven't asked him about it
yet. There are a couple of other nits I'd like to pick but overall it
seems to be working well.

Maybe animation should be an option?-)
Well actually the gif is already animated (also in your version), it is
just that the underlying control (MessageDisplay) is not informed of
the changing bitmap. Move another window over XanaNews so that it needs
to refresh the MessageDisplay contents. If you look carefully you'll
see that the image is not always the same (I know difficult to see with
that specific gif :).
> However, I have an app where I wanted to use an animated gif and

The original version of TGIFImage stopped working on D7 (or was it
D6?), there was a deadlock in the painting thread. Later versions were
fixed and improved. The previous link to Finn's version works fine
under D7-D2007. There is also one included in D2007 by CodeGear, this
one is called GIFImg. However in this version animation is switched off
by default, you'll have to turn it on by setting Animate to True.

I can move the toolbar(s) around and can add splitters to it. What and
where are you trying to do it?

Thanks. I'll take another look at it when I get a round tuit. I honestly
do not remember the problem(s) I was having at the time last year.
| Like what?
1) - In earlier versions of XN if I had a reply open I could just move the
cursor to the right over the message view pane and click on the scroll-bar
area and the reply window would automatically minimize. (I have my display
arranged so that the reply window just fills the message view window
except for showing the message view pane scroll-bar.) Now I have to move
the cursor to the little-tiny-itsy-bitsy "-" square button on the reply
windows frame to minimize it.
2) - I often have a couple of other things open on the desktop, almost
always at least two instances of WindowsExplorer. Now some actions (I
haven't yet paid attention to what specific actions.) cause XN to not be
the most "forward" top display and another app/WE instance displays over
XN. Annoying.
[I just noticed that it happens as I closed this reply before posting. So
I opened the reply to edit and added this info. <g>]
Did you notice I was able to get the salutation again displaying at the
top of the reply where it properly belongs? <g> I had to add my old
change form about three years ago to get it to happen. How did you get it
to happen? I think I'm missing or have forgotten something. <g>

Well actually after the spelling-checker form closes.
Quick and "dirty" fix when not using Vista, set MainFormOnTaskBar back
to False in the dpr file.

It probably did not minimize but just disappeared behind the main form.
You can get this behaviour back by changing the following in
PostMessageForm.pas
===================
Line 509:
---------
procedure TfmPostMessage.CreateParams(var params: TCreateParams);
begin
inherited CreateParams(params);
params.ExStyle := params.ExStyle or WS_EX_APPWINDOW;
params.WndParent := Application.Handle; // <= add this line
end;

That requires the following changes:
NewsReader2.dpr
===============
MainFormOnTaskBar back to True (if you had changed it).
PostFrame.pas
=============
Line 120:
---------
if not cbCheckSpelling.Checked or
(CWSpellChecker1.CheckAndShowModal(skipFirstLine) = mrOK) then
<change to>
if not cbCheckSpelling.Checked or
(CWSpellChecker1.CheckAndShowModal(Owner as TCustomForm, skipFirstLine)
= mrOK) then
Line 332:
---------
CWSpellChecker1.CheckAndShowModal(skipFirstLine);
<change to>
CWSpellChecker1.CheckAndShowModal(Owner as TCustomForm,
skipFirstLine);
cmpCWSpellChecker.pas
=====================
Line 15:
--------
function CheckAndShowModal(SkipFirstLine: boolean) : Integer;
<change to>
function CheckAndShowModal(PopupParent: TCustomForm; SkipFirstLine:
boolean) : Integer;
Line 26:
--------
function TCWSpellChecker.CheckAndShowModal(SkipFirstLine: boolean):
Integer;
<change to>
function TCWSpellChecker.CheckAndShowModal(PopupParent: TCustomForm;
SkipFirstLine : boolean) : Integer;
Line 44:
--------
<add>
fmSpellChecker.FormStyle := fsNormal;
fmSpellChecker.PopupParent := PopupParent;
fmSpellChecker.PopupMode := pmExplicit;
<before>
result := fmSpellChecker.ShowModal
I still need to try this on Vista to see if everything works OK.

Tested it on Vista, it works the same as on XP, focus now correctly
returns to the main window after the spelling-checker and post window
are closed.
There was just one tiny irritation left. When I pressed OK in the post
window and the spelling-checker form popped up it looked like the post
window disappears for a moment (pushed back behind the main window) and
then the spelling-checker pulls it back to the front again. On XP it
was just a short flash, on Vista it was a bit more noticeable.
Cause and fix (SpellCheckerForm.*)...
The FormStyle of fmSpellChecker originally was fsStayOnTop, in the
changes posted before I "fixed" that by setting it back in the source
to fsNormal just before the form was shown. This caused the above
flicker. When you set the FormStyle to fsNormal at design-time the
flickering will be gone.

remove above line again and set FormStyle of fmSpellChecker at
design-time to fsNormal.

other clients should have the option somewhere). Modified files are ok
