THRESHOLD marks Columbus Debut of the Barbara Thatcher Company
The Barbara Thatcher Company presents an evening-length modern dance
premier entitled THRESHOLD. Originally inspired by the martial arts
term ma'ai, the critical distance between two people where anything can
happen, THRESHOLD explores human relationships by investigating spatial
and energetic extremes. Using macro and micro models, dancers revolve
around each other like planets suspended in orbit, or rebound off each
other as if they are atoms changing energy levels. The choreography is
precise, defined, and unpredictable. The simple act of breathing is
repeated until the shoulders shrug and the arms swing, slice, and
acceler! ate until the centripetal force seems to transform their
entire being.
Supported by a Greater Columbus Arts Council Project Grant and the OSU
Dance Department, THRESHOLD marks the debut of Barbara Thatcher
Company's first evening-length production in Columbus. Bessie-award
winning lighting designer Dave Covey creates a resonant performance
space, height! ened by the musical direction of Columbus-based
percussionist, Joe Krygier.
Established in 2003, this innovative modern dance company dedicates
itself to the creation of new dance in Ohio. Company members include
Rachel Boggia, Kristina Isabelle, Karl Rogers, Barbara Thatcher and
Boris Willis. Members boast national and international performance
credits in modern dance, avant-garde theater, and circus, performing
with choreographers such as Stephen Petronio, Elizabeth Streb, Liz
Lerman, Creach/Company, Jacobs Pillow's Men Dancers: A Ted Shawn
Legacy, and the Canadian theater group da da kamera.
