Muting/unmuting

My first post here, I’m just hoping someone can help. I’m loving Borderlands, however there’s something that’s driving me mad! Seriously! All I want to do is mute and unmute samples. As in, bring in samples , build them up, and take them away. I hope it’s me but I can’t do this. I can mute all, I can solo one. Surely other people want to do this? Please help!
