Multi-column lists

Using BS 3. I have a long ul list of items that I want to flow from multi-columns on large screens down to a single column in xs size. e.g.

Medium/Large screen

1   5  9

2   6  10

3   7  11

4   8  12

 to small screen

1   7

2   8

3   9

4  10

5  11

6  12

to xs screen

single column

Any suggestions on best practices for this? On large screens it might even be better to use 4 columns, and go down from there. To complicate things, the list may grow or shrink by quite a few items over time, so I don't really want to have to cut/paste from one div list to another.
