Hello,

Is there a link to an editable version of the WeScheme NinjaCat game somewhere, or could it be made available?

Thanks!

Gunther

Hi Gunther - the code to NinjaCat can be found in the source-files.zip archive, which teachers use alongside the downloadable DrRacket installation. It's pretty much identical to the code we use on WeScheme.

Thanks for the quick response!

I could not actually find a link to this archive on the web site, nor under teacher materials.
Google produced a file from Fall 2014 but the code does not seem to include a final version? Is there a more recent file maybe?

The link is embedded in the materials themselves, just like the WeScheme links. (If you haven't had a chance to look closely at the lesson plans yet, check out the links embedded in Unit 3)

Yup found it!

Sadly it's not really usable with WeScheme, is it? I am afraid I don't know enough about the differences, to rewrite this.
We are trying to keep the IDE portion simple and online, and WeScheme is great for that. So, if it is out there somewhere, it would still be nice to get the WeScheme version.

Thx

I'm sorry, but I don't think I understand what you're trying to do here. Are you trying to change the game to show students something different during Unit 1, or are you trying to help students make a game like NinjaCat?

Some context around who you're teaching, what you're teaching, and why the NinjaCat source code is needed would really help here.

Thanks,
Emmanuel

Hello Emmanuel,

NinjaCat is the first Bootstrap game the students (12-14) will see in action - before they start designing their own.
So, it would just be nice to have a finished solution for that game available for reference, and to help answer specific question around it.

Thanks again,

Gunther

Ah, this is very helpful. Thanks for clarifying.

First of all, students do not design games like NinjaCat. They are similar, but don't include things like jumping or gravity. Getting the sourcecode to NinjaCat would be about as helpful as getting the sourcecode to TombRaider in this context. :)

Secondly, if want a reference for a finished game, you can find this in the teacher resources section.

Finally, however, I'd caution you against answering questions by referring to code. Most of the time student errors happen on paper, as they're thinking through the Design Recipe. If a student runs into trouble and has a question, debugging code is often the worst way to help them sort it out: the bug is in their thinking, not their code! This is why we use a student workbook, and why we provide an answer key to this workbook. I recommend starting there.

OK, I see. That is very helpful to know as well.

I might just prepare a simpler example game of my own then, and demo that.
So that the students don't make their own designs too complex.

Great Support!
