Hi everyone,
I'm trying to reduce paper and convert assignments to Google Classroom. I've started (i.e. one time) converting the Unit exercises into .docx and Google Docs. I'm planning to convert more as I use and teach with them. Is the community interested in these?

Emmanuel, is there anything I should add or take away from my first conversion? If enough are made, could these be linked next to the Additional Exercises?

The .docx is attached and here's the Google Doc link:

What does the Bootstrap community think? It's a big project for one person, but if we all agree on a standard (too bad MS Word and Google Docs can't use CSS), I think it'd really benefit teachers.

Hi Luke,

I'm the one on the Bootstrap team who maintains the software that generates all of our curricular materials pages.  I'd like to make sure I understand what you are trying to achieve, because it would be much better in the long term if we could generate the files you need from the same sources that we use to generate the workbooks and current HTML pages.

Google Docs allows uploads of PDF.  Is there a reason that uploading PDF to GDocs doesn't work for you?

I also thought that it was possible to generate OpenOffice files from XML, which would in turn be uploadable as GDocs.  (This is more work on our end than generating PDFs, which we can do quite easily).

So tell me more about any features you need from the GDoc upload and we'll see what's possible to do programmatically.  (I don't have experience with Google Classroom, btw)

Hi Kathi,
Thanks for your quick response!
Google Classroom and Microsoft Classroom (Apple will probably catch up eventually) are online classroom management systems.
The feature I love is the ability to create assignments. Each student gets a (Google Doc) copy of the assignment. The student can compete it on their phone, tablet, or computer and submit it.
The reason a PDF or hyperlink wouldn't work is they aren't editable online.
Ideally, each activity would be in a format that could upload and convert to Google Docs without needing edits before assigning to students. In my example Google Doc, I added a third column where students write the matched answer. Drawing lines and circling are annoying to do in a Google Doc.
I would love an .odt file, but I'd still need to make changes before it's ready for students.

Sorry if I rambled. Thanks for all your help and hard work!

Hi Luke - I know Rosanna has written to you off-thread, but I wanted to share this information with the whole community and invite you to put your energy to a slightly different purpose:

1) All of our homework exercises are available in GDoc format via this shared folder. NOTE: these will not be updated in the event that we change, remove or add other homework exercises. Keeping our own build system in sync with GDrive is monumentally difficult.

2) Luke, if you're ready to put energy into adapting exercises anyway, may I suggest an alternate format? Turn each exercise into a Google Quiz, so that students can get instant feedback on their performance. This may not be possible with all exercises, but there's a lot to be gained even from just a few conversions. What do you think?

Emmanuel,
Thanks again for the shared folder. It's a great starting point!
And your idea of using a Google Form as a quiz is great! I'll get to work on this and see how it works out.

Edit: I just tried it out. I think this might work alright!

Sweet!

Just one suggestion. Use a part of WeScheme that has a blank background. The WeScheme logo is pretty distracting when it shows up in the background of these images (since it's bereft of context, instead of blending into the background it calls attention to itself).

Yeah, I just did screenshots of the exercises. I didn't rewrite them. I'd prefer to copy and paste, but that's not possible for some reason. (side note: why can't I copy and paste?)

When I have more time or motivation, I'll make it look nicer. But it's enough for my class for today.😉

No problem.

Just so it's clear, I'm not objecting to screen-shots instead of code-as-text. (Screen-shots actually have an advantage: if you give an exercise like "what will this produce — tell me without running it", students can't just copy the code back out, so they're more likely to follow your instructions.) I'm just suggesting copying from a different part of the screen.

For instance, the difference between

(clear background) and

which is the same code, but now has a distracting background.

But, it's all good!

Thanks,
Shriram
