Sorry I don't think I've done an email on this event yet, with Covid I wasn't sure when it would be possible.
The info below is referring to this Saturday (12 March)
Regards
Reuben
*** Hello, at this date I feel it's still to risky for my family and I to attend. Covid seems to be peaking. I'm going to leave the event running in case you want to attend. I believe the info is still correct. Please use the comments section below to let others know if your keen / discuss another date that might suit you better etc.
Thank you for your patience and understanding ***
Kawau Island lies north of Auckland in the Hauraki Gulf.
Rich in history, the island was once a busy mining settlement, and later became the home of New Zealand Governor Sir George Grey, who developed the stately Mansion House and its exotic gardens.
Plan:
* From Mansion House we'll walk to the Old Copper Mine. This is a 2-3 hour return walk. 90% of Kawau Island is privately owned with 10% owned by the DOC. The walk from Mansion House to the Coppermine is the length of this section
* Lunch at the Coppermine site
* There will be time for a swim along the way, or when we return
* Explore the Mansion House grounds before catching the 4:30pm return ferry
Kawau Island is undulating so some fitness will be required. I'm not sure of the distance or terrain. We do have lots of time though.
If you don't wish to walk you're welcome to come and have a relaxing day on the Island.
Cost:
The ferry currently costs:
$58 for an adult
$34 for a child (5-15)
$0 preschoolers
What to bring:
Sunscreen, sun hat, sunglasses, towel, swimming togs, comfortable walking shoes / clothes, a light jacket depending on weather, camera, food & water, back pack to carry gear
