Predator was written in 1984 with the working title of Hunter. Filming ran from March to June 1986 with creature effects devised by Stan Winston and a budget of around $15 million. 20th Century Fox released the film on June 12, 1987, in the United States, and it grossed $98 million worldwide. Initial reviews were mixed, but the film has since been considered a classic of the action and science fiction genres and one of the best films of the 1980s, and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

Released on June 12, 1987, Predator was No. 1 at the US box office in its opening weekend with a gross of $12 million, which was second to only Beverly Hills Cop II for the calendar year 1987.[26] The film grossed $98,267,558, of which $59,735,548 was from the US & Canadian box office. $38,532,010 was made in other countries.[27]

Predator has appeared on a number of "best of" lists. In 2007, C. Robert Cargill of RealNetworks resource, Film.com (now merged into MTV Movies), ranked Predator as the seventh best film of 1987, calling it "one of the great science fiction horror films, often imitated, but never properly duplicated, not even by its own sequel."[38] Entertainment Weekly named it the 22nd greatest action movie of all time in 2007, and the 14th among "The Best Rock-'em, Sock-'em Movies of the Past 25 Years" in 2009, saying "Arnold Schwarzenegger has never been as manly as he was in this alien-hunting testosterone-fest."[39][40] In 2012, IGN proclaimed it the 13th greatest action movie of all time.[41] In 2008, Empire magazine ranked it 366th on their list of "The 500 Greatest Movies of All Time".[42] Predator was ranked 4th in a 2015 Rolling Stone reader poll of the all-time best action films; it was described by reporter Andy Greene as "freakin' awesome".[43] In a 2018 review for IGN, William Bibbiani called Predator, "The most subversive action movie of the 1980s" and cites examples from the film of satire of the action film genre as a whole. In his review, he writes, "Predator may be a big, macho action movie, but it's also highly critical of the kinds of characters you'd normally find in big, macho action movies, and the superficial, unquestioningly heroic stories they appear in."[44]

yes its amazing stan winston whipped the predator we know and love out of his ass like that. so many awesome things that man and his team did. when the predator takes off his mask it just looks so fleshy and life like compared to any other predator. im sure this was paired with brilliant directing and knowing how to photograph the suit to make it look its best.

"Predator" is filmed very well. It's a slick, high-energy action picture that takes a lot of its strength from its steamy locations in Mexico. The heroes spend most of their time surrounded by an impenetrable jungle, a green wall of majestic vistas populated by all sorts of natural predators in addition to the alien. I've rarely seen a jungle look more beautiful, or more convincing; the location effect is on a par with "Fitzcarraldo" and "The Emerald Forest."

The predator of the movie's title is a visitor from space; that's established in the opening scene. What it is doing in the jungle is never explained. The creature lives in the trees, even though it seems to be a giant biped much too heavy to swing from vines. When Schwarzenegger finally grapples with it, we discover it is wearing a space suit, and that inside the suit is a disgusting creature with a mouth surrounded by little pincers to shove in the food.

Predator is a 1987 sci-fi action film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as Major Alan "Dutch" Schaefer, the leader of a special ops rescue team who soon discover that they have become the prey of an unusual hunter. The film was directed by John McTiernan (Die Hard) and became notable on several levels, for popularizing the idea of a hand-held M134 minigun and the fact that two of its cast members (Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jesse Ventura) would later be elected to the office of governor in the states of California and Minnesota respectively. The film would spawn several sequels: 1990's Predator 2, 2010's Predators, and 2018's The Predator as well as the Alien vs. Predator series.

Predator is a 1987 science-fiction/action movie helmed by John McTiernan and written by the Thomas brothers. The Predator series kicks off with this inaugural installment. Arnold Schwarzenegger takes the lead role as the commander of an elite paramilitary team, dispatched to rescue hostages in a Central American rainforest in Guatemala. There they encounter the strong extraterrestrial hunter known as The Predator (Kevin Peter Hall). The Predator will not rest until each member of the team has been hunted down.

Predator was originally scripted in 1984, with the working title of Hunter. Production for this film ran from March to June 1986, with a budget of about $15 million. Stan Winston was responsible for creating the creature effects. On June 12, 1987, 20th Century Fox unleashed the movie in theaters across the United States and it quickly became a blockbuster sensation that grossed an astonishing $98 million worldwide! Initially, opinions on Predator were both positive and negative, yet it eventually gained a reputation as an iconic action/sci-fi movie and one of the most remarkable films from the 1980s. It even earned itself an Academy Award nomination for Visual Effects.

DS: How much experimentation went into those click based vocalizations that the predator emits? What did they derive from and did you have any idea they would be so iconic 20 years later?

See below for the exact times and descriptions of the 7 jump scares in Predator, which has a jump scare rating of 2.0.Jump Scare Rating: Predator has some minor jump scares although the music generally builds to a crescendo shortly before these moments occur giving viewers some warning. The jump scares are mainly in the second half when the Predator begins to attack the team.

With the advent of Prey or Predator 5, it looks like the Predator franchise is set on finally redeeming itself in the horror genre. The premise of Native Americans going up against a literal alien in their own ancestral domain (on top of European colonizers) is quite a novel and relevant twist. It certainly lines up well with the clever allegories introduced by the first film, Predator (1987).

Initially, Predator (1987) looked like it was just another obnoxious army recruitment ad disguised as an action flick, but along comes the titular movie monster and starts turning the Gung-ho musclemen cast into vulnerable victims. It's not perfect, of course; but it's easier to appreciate now more than ever, especially since the subtexts have all surfaced. And in the spirit of appreciation, here are some of the most memorable lines from Predator (1987).

The predator is more powerful than the American soldiers in every way imaginable. It is more stealthy, stronger, has more firepower at its disposal, etc. The predator, in its transparency, is at first believed by one character to be the jungle itself. She, captured from the original compound, claims that the jungle is fighting back, defending itself from the American intruders.

During the summer of 1987, two movies were released that defined 80's action movies, John McTiernan's "Predator" and Paul Verhoeven's "Robocop". Both of these became iconic franchises that spawned multiple sequels, outshoots and now prequels. One of these had a cast of macho 80s alpha action stars and one had virtual unknowns. This week we give you the stories behind the making of these two movies. Which do you choose? Your move, creep!

Predator (1987) is a big movie. The actors are big. The guns are big. The campiness is big. Marc had never seen it; Chad is obsessed with it. And that friends, is a recipe for hilarity. We discuss 80s action tropes, masculinity, hockey violence, and whether or not Arnold Schwarzennegger is the greatest human to have ever lived.

Released on June 12, 1987, Predator was #1 at the box office in its opening weekend. Its opening weekend gross of $12 million was second to Beverly Hills Cop II in 1987.[11] The film grossed $60 million in the U.S. and $98 million at the worldwide box office.[12]

The use of parameter estimation techniques for partial differential equations is illustrated using a predatorprey model. Whereas ecologists have often estimated parameters in models, they have not previously been able to do so for models that describe interactions in heterogeneous environments. The techniques we describe for partial differential equations will be generally useful for models of interacting species in spatially complex environments and for models that include the movement of organisms. We demonstrate our methods using field data from a ladybird beetle (Coccinella septempunctata) and aphid (Uroleucon nigrotuberculatum) interaction. Our parameter estimation algorithms can be employed to identify models that explain better than 80% of the observed variance in aphid and ladybird densities. Such parameter estimation techniques can bridge the gap between detail-rich experimental studies and abstract mathematical models. By relating the particular bestfit models identified from our experimental data to other information on Coccinella behavior, we conclude that a term describing local taxis of ladybirds towards prey (aphids in this case) is needed in the model.
