If you use a local account in Window 11, you should create a password reset disk using a USB flash drive as soon as possible. Then, if you forget your password, you can reset it. If you wait until you've forgotten your password, it'll be too late. We recommend you add security questions to your local account in case you forget your password, so you don't need to create a password reset disk. To do this, select Start > Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Update your security questions.
If you forget your Windows password, you can use a password reset disk to create a new one. We recommend that you create a password reset disk when you create your password, so you don't lose access to your files and information.
If the local account password is lost/forgotten, and a password reset disk is not available, reinstalling the operating system is the next best solution. For information on reinstalling Windows, refer to SLN291833
On Windows 10, forgetting a password and the security questions can be one of the more frustrating things to deal with, and if you're unlucky enough to have forgotten the account password, you may be cursing to the heavens. The good news is you can avoid this by creating a password reset disk.
A password reset disk is a file you create on a USB drive, allowing you to reset your password from the Sign-in screen. The best part about the password reset disk is you only have to create it once, and it will work forever, no matter how many times you use it.
I use Windows 7 as my secondary OS and it has an option for creating Password reset disk i.e. a flash drive when inserted to a locked Win 7 (in case password is forgotten), would reset the system password and open the system for the user. Is it possible to make something like that for ubuntu 11.10????
We found an old Snow Leapard disk, and we can boot with this (by holding down option), it then works for a bit, then says you need to restart your computer. When we do this, and restart, it says "your computer was restarted because of a problem" then it just goes back to the "enter disk password" again. I.e it doesnt seem possible to re-install OSX from snow leapard DVD.
We dont care about the data, we just want to wipe it and reinstall, which so far seems imposisble. Opening the mac to take out the disk, format it with a PC, then put it back in looks too risky, and we dont have the special screwdrivers, and we dont know if this will help solve the problem and allow us to install Snow leapard, then upgrade through app store.
Hi, thanks for linking that article, but it is not usable as it requires that you can login. The mac mini only presents two options when it boots: enter the disk password (which we dont know) or login as gues which gives you safari and nothing else. The article you linked to requires that you login with an administrator account. We neither know any current or original administrator account passwords, nor is there any way to login as one.
To reset the password, go down to where it say's Resetting the original administrator account password in blue and expand that section by clicking on it and follow the instructions there.
As outloined above, this does not work. We Hit C to boot with the disk, it works for a bit, then says reboot, when we reboot it comes right back to the "enter disk password". I.e. it does not come up asking for language, nor give any option to install, nor any option to reset passwords. It is not possible to recover or rebuild using a DVD.
It sounds as if the previous user set a firmware password. You will find instructions for recovering firmware passwords in Apple Knowledge Base article TS35544 Good luck -- Personally I have always thought firmware passwords were evil because of all the problems I have seen them cause.
I dont think this is a firmware password, when you boot, it shows two icons, a disk and a guest user. Below the HD icon, it says "disk password". Looking at google images for firmware password, they all explicity say firmware password on the various dialogues.
The issue is simply someone has encrypted the disk contents. Installing osx on top of this using a DVD does not seem to work, so some other solution is presumably required. this must be a fairly common scenario - someone forgets their disk password, and has to re-install from scratch?
That's it. Now you know how to create a password reset disk and recover your password. Remember that the password reset disk only works for local accounts (not domain accounts). Also, if you use the password reset disk, you can use the same disk again in the future without the need to update it.
If you don't have a password reset disk but need to recover your password, try installing Parted Magic onto a USB flash drive and using the chntpw tool. It's not as elegant as the password reset disk, but it beats reinstalling Windows.
When people forget their Windows password and can't log on to their computer, they regret not having created a password reset disk beforehand. So people wish there were a way to make a password reset disk for another computer. If so, they don't have to get worried when they forget Windows password and have no password reset disk. Actually, it is possible to realize that. Now this page will explain how to do it.
Tips: iSumsoft Windows Password Refixer makes it easy to create a password reset disk for another computer, but if you have spare removable media, such as a USB flash drive, you are still recommended to make a password reset disk in advance using the Forgotten Password Wizard with Windows itself, just in case you forget your computer password. However, such a reset disk can only reset password for that user account on that computer. It doesn't work for another user account or another computer.
It it too late to make a password reset disk as this should be done before the time you forgot the password. There are other tools available for this such as UUkeys Windows Password or Ubuntu Live CD. However, the later method is a bit trickly as it involves linux commands during the process.
