Greetings,
Does anyone in the Bookshare community know of any grant to help offer
incentives or rewards for reading? I have worked with some school
PTA's that are affluent, however there are many title 1 schools with
little to no resources regarding PTA funding. I would like to do
something along the lines of our local public library offers different
levels of reading rewards (gifts certificates for Frosties, Hockey
Game, Baseball Game, cool t-shirts, etc...) to stop the "Summer
Slide". I am thinking of a "mini" version of this......Some of the
barriers I face other than the standard AT barriers (stigma, learning
curve, technology not working, etc...) , are

-Elementary School-20 minutes of required reading at home varies at
each school. Some do not enforce or promote.
-Elementary School-time for silent reading has diminished due to ever
increasing standards push
-Middle/High-no more required summer reading of novels
-During novel studies from 4-12, in many schools the English teacher
reads the entire novel. There are numerous reasons given for this & I
do understand some of them, but if the gen ed students are not
reading, then our students most certainly are not using tools such as
Bookshare

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I need to get my students
reading, especially due to the academic decline over Covid....

Chad, I love this idea!  Does your district have a foundation that you can ask?  or could you do a Donor's Choose?

Hi Chad,
The local Chick-Fil-A does a lot for our school district.
I don't know if you have one, but it might be work a try.
Good luck!
