Hi everyone,  My school district is considering the Voice Dream Reader app under the new Android OS on Chrome capability for our students with Bookshare memberships.  Are any of you working through the kinks on this?  Tx, ~Patty

Just wondering if the free ability to "Read Now" in the Chrome Browser is not offering enough features or not functioning well for you?

Our district will slowly be moving from Windows machines to Chromebooks over the next few years but we are not using any "apps" because they're blocked so I'm hoping we can just use the Chrome browser for Bookshare access and that is what we're using now on our Lenovo student laptops and it's working fine

Hi Mikki, Thanks for your response.  We've had a terrible response from teachers & students to the voices using the Read Now feature so the more natural voice sounding options are important and the highlighting/notetaking features are important for our LD students.
btw, most Chromebook apps and extensions are blocked by our admin but we just request they unblock things as we need them.  ~Patty

Hi, I know there was an issue recently, but I think they fixed it. In my experience, Chromebooks and the readnow feature are much better than ipads because-

  • it's free
  • there is not a complex mobile device management system (our district has been through 3 and have directly worked with Apple with little success.....) to push apps remotely. It often fails.
  • it has a higher % rate of working when compared to an ipad using an MDM
Our school district has set up a process with our IT dept to
  • communicate monthly
  • express concerns directly
  • when a service ticket is called in, our exceptional needs students jump to the front of the line because it is an IEP accommodation so they get priority
This is how our district has expressed concerns with unblocking apps or extensions on chromebooks.

and to add to Chad's list

Reading Lists work like GOLD when using Chrome and read Now

I have not used iPad devices for Bookshare for a long time but the whole issue with Reading Lists not showing up was frustrating to me  when working with students - is it still the same that lists are sort of there but invisible?

Yes, our school district has moved from iPads to chromebooks which has worked out much better!!! For reading and writing supports chromebooks work best for my students! Reading lists have made my job so much easier! I have them for each grade level for all schools in the district.

Dolphin Easy Reader, which is a free iOS app, integrates directly with Bookshare and will show the students their Reading Lists. When the student logs in to Bookshare within the app, they see “My Reading Lists.” This is a relatively recent development with Easy Reader.
