COVID-19 situation update

For the latest information from Beaumont on COVID-19, please visit providers.beaumont.org/COVID19update. All provider resources for COVID-19 can be found at providers.beaumont.org/coronavirus.

Beaumont Health will provide daily information to team members about COVID-19 as the situation continuously evolves.

Important update regarding COVID-19 testing at all sites (including ambulatory)

Message from Dr. Nick Gilpin, System Medical Director, Infection Prevention, Beaumont Health and Dr. Barbara Ducatman, Chief, Department of Pathology, Beaumont Health

Due to demand issues and a limited supply of key reagents, if COVID-19 testing is ordered, the following algorithm will be deployed:

  • COVID-19 testing ordered > sample sent to lab > lab performs rapid flu/RSV
  • If flu/RSV testing is positive > No further testing will be done
  • If flu/RSV testing is negative > COVID-19 testing will be sent to MDHHS per protocol
  • Only symptomatic patients will be tested.

Respiratory virus panel testing will be temporarily suspended due to a shortage of reagents. The supply of RVP testing reagents is currently being reallocated to help create and validate an in-house COVID-19 test for Beaumont. We determined that having the ability to perform an in-house COVID-19 test is valuable to our patients and health care providers, and the benefit exceeds the risk of not being able to perform respiratory virus panel testing in the interim.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) hotline - 248-551-7000

  • Staffed by Beaumont nurses, the hotline is a community resource for timely, accurate information about COVID-19 symptoms and virtual screening for people who are experiencing symptoms.
  • The line is open Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Nurses will answer questions about the virus and direct patients to the appropriate level of care:
    • treating symptoms at home.
    • following up with a primary doctor.
    • seeking treatment at an urgent care or an emergency center.

Visitor safety restrictions

  • To protect our patients, staff, visitors and the community during the outbreak, all routine visiting is restricted at our eight acute care campuses until the transmission of COVID-19 is no longer a threat. No visitors will be allowed in rooms of patients with pending or positive COVID-19 tests, except under extraordinary circumstances.
  • Anyone under the age of 16 is restricted from visiting, except under extraordinary circumstances.
  • Most patients will be allowed two visitors who must remain in the hospital room for the duration of the visit.
    • All visitors will be required to be screened for symptoms of respiratory illness (fever, runny nose, cough and shortness of breath) prior to entering one of our acute care campuses. Individuals with these symptoms will not be permitted to visit patients.
  • After a visit is complete, visitors must leave the hospital and cannot remain in waiting areas, public areas or cafeterias.

Travel restrictions

  • Beaumont has instituted travel restrictions effective immediately for Beaumont Health team members due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.
  • These include restrictions on business travel both domestically and internationally, as well as safety regulations that apply to both business and personal travel and reimbursement related to business travel.
  • If you have specific questions, contact your Human Resources representative.
