The FAAC Movie Club presents a powerful, 2001 Indian historical drama written and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. It is entertaining with traditional music, dancing, sports and romance. It reflects the socio-political climate, culture, and values of the nation.
LAGAAN: ONCE UPON A TIME IN INDIA (India) 2001
The film is set in 1893, during the late Victorian period of India's colonial British Raj. The setting is a small village in Central India, whose inhabitants are burdened by high taxes or “Lagaan”. After several years of drought, they find themselves in an extraordinary situation, as an arrogant British Indian Army officer challenges them to a game of cricket, as a wager to avoid paying the taxes they owe.
Lagaan received widespread critical acclaim and awards at international film festivals, as well as many Indian film awards. It was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It can be viewed on Netflix.
