I do not know why I alternately liked and hated the story. It is definitely unusual: It describes the life of two friends through the eyes of a man through the adolescent to adult to mature stages. The book is divided into three major parts. The first one tells of growing up in London suburbia and has many interesting vignettes of suburban life. The second part is adulthood in Paris and adventures with a girl and a group of new friends. The third part is a comfortable married life, back in suburbia, torn with doubts on whether ‘this is what I really wanted’.
On the whole, it is meant to be funny but never manages to quite tickle the ribs. It grazes the outskirts of what is offbeat and is a terrible drag in many places: but retains enough of a different perspective to life to stop you from giving up on the book.
I do not think it is one of the books that quite make it up to the memorable category.
Let us say, 4/10
