The story of Elizabeth and Darcy woven skillfully against the backdrop of old English scenery and lifestyle The background story Elizabeth’s family consisting of the ever-complaining mother, the beautiful and tender hearted sister Jane and the hell-cat sister Lydia is told with humour and polish. Once you get used to the style of the author (`chuze” for choose and other old English usage) you settle down comfortably for a fun filled ride, aided by deft characterizations (the Countess for example) and clear narrative. A very very readable book and one of the most memorable. The confrontation between the Countess and Elizabeth towards the end of the novel is a high point in the book.
For a book written very long ago, it still remains enjoyable and not at all a hard read, if you can navigate the odd English phraseology. Definitely not as hard as understanding a Shakespearean play.
