Lord of the Rings movie series (kudos to Peter Jackson!) exposed Tolkien to a lot of the new generation who would have not heard of him otherwise or not paid enough interest to look him up or read his books. The Hobbit is also coming out in the movie form shortly. So, I guess this review is timely.
Despite the fame of the book, I found that the story sagged a bit, and also it appeared to be a trifle childish. Initially you start to wonder what the hype is all about. However, the book picks up quite a bit and really is a delightful read, once you get used to the style of storytelling and the details of the world that the characters inhabit. It is still a children’s adventure book with no central plot like the once that populate J.K Rowlings’ works but it carries you along in its gentle wake and I should say I really did enjoy the ride.
The book is about the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit who has been reluctantly roped into an adventure by the wily wizard Gandalf and finds that once he gets going on his journey, he enjoys the adventure immensely. It is, of course, the prequel to Lord of the Rings, which tells the story of Frodo Baggins, but then Bilbo also puts in a brief (cameo?) appearance in that series.
. A dragon, many goblins, trolls, dwarves, elves and wolves populate this story, as does the inimitable Gollum.
If you are just OK with going for the ride, it is a nice read — 7/10
