This is a sequel to Odd Thomas, which has not been reviewed in this group.
I have read the book and I was underwhelmed by that book. If anything, this book is worse. This continues the saga of Odd Thomas on another one of his adventures. At the end of the book, you realize that the whole story could have been put down in about 15 pages with no great loss of essence of the story. To compound the boredom, you already know what Odd Thomas can do in terms of his special powers, so there are no surprises, as there was when you found out about it in the first book. And the tone of the story is irritatingly light, not really humorous but excruciatingly pretend-funny, in my opinion, as if the narrator is forced to be jovial by some corporate edict.
Here Odd’s friend Danny is kidnapped and his dad is murdered by persons unknown. Odd is drawn to their location by the powers that he possesses, amd he ‘senses‘ that he needs to go and confront a group of three evil, malicious people, who are armed to the teeth and ready to kill at will. For this formidable job, he goes in with no weapons (since it is against his principles), and with absolutely no plan other than to follow his instinct, which tells him definitely not to involve the police but go alone, as otherwise ‘Danny is sure to be killed’. Go figure.
Not complicated enough? Here is something more for you, Danny has this disease where he has very fragile bones and any rough handling or even long transportation could break his bones! Here is the mandatory invalid with a golden heart that seems to be needed in most of Koontz books these days.
The way Odd Thomas ‘overcomes’ the three evil people is even more corny, and seems to be written with no basic plot line planned in advance.
At the end of it, you come out of the book feeling completely cheated. Definitely not a rewarding or fun read for me.
I will give it a 1/10
