We have reviewed the earlier books The Fellowship of the Ring  and The Two Towers earlier in this Blog.

This is Part 3 of the Lord of the Rings ‘Trilogy’ and continues the story of the Hobbit adventures.

There are no new characters introduced in this book, since this takes the story to the logical finish, with Sauron conquered and the triumphant return of our heroes back home.

It really starts with a whimper, and the plot is very weak in the beginning, when Tolkien tries to get Sam and Frodo out of the predicament in which they found themselves at the end of Book 2 and their escape out of this is indeed disappointingly told.

I was stunned to read the absence of any ideas in their escape.

But luckily, it gets better and gets positively absorbing when the denouement ultimately occurs, with further surprises along the way when the heroes return triumphantly home.

It gives us a sense of completion. If you have taken the trouble to read Books 1 & 2, you will definitely read through Book 3.

I would rate it a 6/10.
