This features Dr Kay Scarpetta, a criminal forensic expert (Chief Medical Examiner). She is up against a serial killer who targets young couples at night and kills them in the same fashion. Shoes are always missing. The victims are always found several weeks later so that the bodies hold no evidence of how they were killed. Some exceptions make it intriguing and when Mrs Pat Harvey the drug czar in involved as a parent of one of the girls killed, the case assumes high profile. Marino and Wesley (FBI) are other characters involved. Mark figures in the case and also is the love interest of Dr Scarpetta.

Patricia is one of the new genre of mystery writers who talk about the personal lives and conflicts of the detective in addition to the mystery itself. But unlike Ann Perry, this thing does not hang together. The forensics of the case are a bit interesting but overall  it is too desultory to hold interest. Finally the ‘who did it’ and the manner of resolution leaves a lot to be desired.

The pun in the name, of course, is sweet.
Overall I would rate it only a 4/10
