Month reminds the public that poets have an integral role to play in
our culture and that poetry matters." Launched by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996, it has become the largest literary celebration in the
world, involving millions of people! More info here
We have several wonderful poetry events this month. We also have a wide range of fantastic poetry books for sale.
Our FREE events this month:
Sat. April 2nd - A Night of Original Music, 7pm to 9pm: Wagner College singer/songwriters perform their original songs.
Thurs. April 7th - "Death Cafe," 7pm- 9pm. Mix and Mingle from 6:30 to 7pm, discussion starts promptly at 7pm; from the website DEATH CAFE: "At a death cafe, people gather to eat cake, drink tea, and discuss death."
Sat. April 9th - Celebration of the work of Ntozake Shange, 2pm-3pm. Jimmy Wright speaks about the works of American playwright and poet, Ntozake Shange, who is best known for her Obie-award winning play "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the rainbow is Enuf." As a Black feminist, she addressed issues of race and Black power in much of her work.
Sat. April 16th - Jewelry Swap, 2pm to 4pm. Bring 2 or more pieces of jewelry to give away, and take what you want! Swap includes jewelry parts also (for DIY).
Sat. April 16th - Write & Celebrate Poetry and the full moon with us! Local poet, Jen Fitzgerald, will lead a poetry writing workshop from 6pm to 7:30pm; the theme is New York City. Followed by a full-moon drumming & poetry reading session, 7:30 to 9pm. Woohoo!
Fri. April 22nd - Earth Day Poetry event, 4pm to 7pm. A very special treat!
In collaboration with Ars Poetica, PEN America and the NYC Literary Action Coalition, independent bookstores in each borough will be hosting poets with their typewriters to type poems for patrons and community members about
Earth Day...we will have the opportunity to
chat with a poet about their biggest inspirations from the natural world,
their fears about the climate crisis, and their dreams for a more
environmentally conscious New York City. Each person will receive a free
personalized poem as a symbol of their investment in creating a more
sustainable and just New York City. Wow!
Sat. April 23rd - St George Day/The International Day of the Book,
Noon to 5pm. Let us gather at the bookcafe and in Tompkinsville Park
(weather permitting) for spontaneous merriment and
unstructured play and frivolity. Perhaps music, singing, dance, spoken
word, games, making art or crafts, picnics, park beautification, planting literal and
figurative seeds. Please join us!
Bring along your pet dragon, wear flowers in your
hair!
Fri. April 29th - Poem in Your Pocket Day, all day. We will be giving out copies of poems by our favorite poets, some of them local. (with permission!) Poetry is best when shared, and Poem in Your Pocket Day is the perfect
time to surprise someone with the gift of poetry. How will you

Ways to Participate!
Sat. April 30th - Open Mic, 7pm to 9pm. Bring your music, poem, dance, etc. to share with us.
We hope to see you here soon. We have outdoor seating in our quiet backyard garden~~have you visited the fairies and gnomes out there? Also, we have free seeds to give away (leftover from our recent seed swap) so drop by if you are a gardener who can use some seeds.
