Hi Everyone,
Just sharing this great opportunity for public testimony on sex ed policy! Please reach out to SEANYC for more information.
All the best,
Susanna
Hi Caitlin and Susanna,
I know I keep emailing you under a number of different hats, but this time I’m reaching out as a representative of the Sexuality Education Alliance of NYC (SEANYC) about a last-minute advocacy opportunity that has come up.
The NYC Council will be holding a hearing on October 27th at 11:00 a.m. in City Hall, on the current state of sexuality education in NYC public schools. This is our opportunity to let the Department of Education know why we need comprehensive K-12 sexuality education for all students that is culturally competent, inclusive of all genders and provides young people the tools they need to make healthy, informed, and empowered decisions throughout the course of their lives. If you are able, we would love for you (or someone on your team/from your school) to join us on October 27th to testify in front of the NYC Council on the importance of comprehensive K-12 sexual health education.
Every young person in New York City will face important decisions about their sexual and reproductive health at some point in their lives and many adolescents are not provided with the tools and resources necessary to make the best health decisions that are right for each of them. While middle and high schools are supposed to provide one semester each of sex education, students, parents and teachers continue to find that many young people are not receiving the necessary – or any – education approved by the Departments of Health and Education.
SEANYC is calling on the New York City Department of Education to implement a Chancellor’s Regulation requiring comprehensive sexual health education that is medically accurate, developmentally appropriate, unbiased and inclusive and respectful of all, in all New York City public schools and all grades. We are also calling for strong enforcement and accountability measures to make sure that every school has the resources to provide supportive inclusive education to all of its students. For more information, please see SEANYC's attached policy recommendations and visit our website: http://sexedallianceofnyc.tumblr.com/
If you are able to attend the hearing on the 27th or are interested in learning more, please let me know. SEANYC will be holding a speaker call this Friday at 2pm to provide preparation on the issues, messaging, and hearing structure.
Best,
Sarah
