Hey Bonzai, here’s a softball question for you gear-heads.

What kind of tires do I want next?

Criteria
Purpose: road
Clinchers (I don’t want to hear from you tubeless guys, I get it, I get it)
Mounting to my deep-dish wheels
I dunno whether I should go to 25s like all the cute girls are doing
Emphasize durability vs. out-and-out speedy

I’ve been riding Conti 4000s for the past couple of years. I’m about to ride ATL to SAV in 2 weeks, that’s 3 days on the bike, and I’d like to change them up. Performance Bike seems to be back online (online only) so that’s a possible source.

Can’t go wrong with Conti Grand Prix 4-Season tires, 25’s. Been riding them for over 10 years & they are reliable, lightweight for class they’re in, & relatively bomb-proof.  Get the all-black special edition as regular edition has pretty ugly brown sidewalls.

Gator Skins don’t ride very well, are probably heavy, but seldom get a flat.

That’s quite an endorsement, Nic. Bad riding and heavy … sounds like my style!

Mike and Eddie - thanks for the reccos as well. Anyone else?

Tires
  • The Conti-4000s is just hard to beat. It’s faster (lower rolling resistance) than the 4 Seasons. It’s lighter and faster than the Gator Skin (a 25mm truck tire)… The 4000s are one of the few tires that are recommended for training, centuries, etc., AND racing.
  • The 5000 is out now. It’s roughly the same weight as the 4000s (depending whose data you look at - it’s lighter and heavier). They’re slightly faster but give up a similar degree of tread and sidewall protection.
  • With the launch of the 5000, the 4000s prices are probably even lower now. The low price of the 4000s combined with their really low rolling resistance has to be why the’ve become so popular.
  • The 4-Season vs 4000s - both solid choices… one slightly faster, the other slightly tougher… both cheap compared to competition

Size
  • You said “… go to 25s” is that from 23s or 28s?
  • For that ride, I would NOT consider 23s. I’d run 25s or 28s
  • The perfect storm could be a low-rolling resistance, light 28mm - run the back at 80-90psi, the front at 75-85psi

YMMV

Andy, for what it’s worth, I rode 4000’s years ago, but switched to GP 4-Seasons after going down several times on wet roads. Whatever compound 4000’s have does not grip well cornering in the rain. 4-Seasons grip very well on wet roads.

I second the recommendation for Conti Grand Prix 4-Season 25s.  Been riding them  for years.

go to 25s is yes, up from 23.
‘m going to take that little plunge with either the 4000s or the 4Seasons. Thanks!

I’ve been riding 28s for last 18 months and like them!   Slight penalty on hills but roll faster than 25s

Quit being a nay sayer. If there was any set of wheels begging for tubeless it is yours. What happened the other day is going to happen again. Tubed tires will always be prone to flats, either pinch or sharp object. On another note I still have a set of Reynolds Carbon wheels, with PowerTap and mounted tires. $600
