Backlink indexing is extremely important. A backlink that Google hasn't indexed usually passes little to no SEO value because Google doesn't know the linking page exists (or hasn't processed the link yet).
A backlink that isn't indexed is often equivalent to having no backlink at all from an SEO perspective. That's why experienced SEOs monitor indexed backlinks, not just total backlinks.
