Bud Grafting the Beech

I am considering trying my hand at bud-grafting a Fernleaf Beech,
Fagus sylvatica “asplenifolia” onto to a common European Beech. I’ve
seen many “how to” bud-grafting articles where they take the bud
(along with the “heal”) and it seems straight forward enough, but the
buds in those articles are always growing right off the bark whereas
all of the “asplenifolia” buds (at my disposal) are borne at the tip
of long twigs.

I can’t see how those can be applied to the normal bud-grafting
technique. Is it possible to use the whole length of twig, including
"the heal" from the branch? Or should I cut close to the base of the
bud, disregarding the heal altogether? Can it be done? Has anyone any
experience in bud-grafting the Beech who can give me some tips and
encouragement?
