Bonsai randomly crashing

Hi,

I am trying to set up a real time conditioned place preference task and have been referencing the workflow designed by another Bonsai user Aaron here.

However, I keep running into this issue where Bonsai just seems to randomly crash for reasons unrelated to the workflow. For example, I'll add a node, run it again, and it immediately crashes. Then I restart the file, disable or delete the new node, run it, and the workflow that used to work will immediately crash. I've systematically gone through the nodes but it seems that once this bug starts appearing, Bonsai will inconsistently crash regardless of the workflow -- I've also started a new file with the same problem.

I am using the Filecapture node to open videos as the first step. I am trying to run analyses on mp4 files obtained from a GoPro Hero 7. The videos seem to play fine on other media player programs. I'm running Bonsai 2.6.2, the graphics card drivers are up to date, and I've also installed K-lite in case of codec issues.

But I am not getting these crashes when testing with a random sample avi file loaded into FileCapture.  That, and the fact that I've gotten these crashes on separate machines running both Windows 7 and 10, make me suspect that it's something with the .mp4 files, but I'm not sure how to diagnose or fix it. Is there any reason why Bonsai might struggle with videos obtained from certain cameras?

Any help appreciated!

Hi Julia,

We have observed this issue before with the MP4 container on some video codecs for some time now. For best performance loading and processing videos, the AVI container is most stable, and as you have observed, will not suffer from these issues.

Until the decoder is updated, I highly recommend using AVI whenever possible for offline batch processing.

Hope this helps.

Ok, thanks for the prompt reply Goncalo. I'll take your recommendation for using AVI going forward.
