Hello from the Bombaxtic team! It's been a long couple months since
our last release and many new features and improvements have been
added to Bombax, but we've hesitated to produce a new release pending
a big decision we've been considering. As you all know, Bombax is a
web development platform using Objective-C and Cocoa on OS X. For
most developers, it's a significant shift from the type of web
programming they've done before and, for most sysadmins, it's a shift
in operating system as well.

We've had nearly 10,000 downloads of Bombax and we regularly hear from
folks who are using it, but we want to spread the word further.
Additionally, the principal reason some people are not ready to switch
to Bombax is that it is a new product and, given the considerable
change in infrastructure and language for most people, it can be risky
to make the investment in a technology that might not be supported.
And, on that note, due to a number of factors we've had less time than
we had anticipated to put into the development of Bombax the last
couple months.

When we look at all of these facts and ask ourselves, 'what is the
best thing that we can do for our users?', the best answer we see is
to open source Bombax. Thus, in the next couple of weeks we'll be
moving Bombax to an open source repository and making it fully
available for free to anyone who would like to use it.

We hope you're as excited by this news as we are! We'll continue to
support and develop Bombax while nurturing its community, but this
should allow it to also take on a life of its own. Thank you so much
to all of you for your ideas and contributions to making Bombax better
(with a special thanks to Marcel of IT2BE.com)!

Sincerely,
Dominic Blais and rest of the Bombaxtic team

This is great news!
I like Bombax - looking to try out the open source version.

WIll a paid variant continue to exist? if so what extra features would the paid version have?

Wow, this is a major step. Thank you for this!

Like asked before will a paid variant remain or become available in another
form?

Thanks,

Marcel

These are wonderful news, and a nice movement.

Good luck, and thanks for continuously listening to the community.

Thank you, everyone! We're leaving the door open for future paid
support and products and currently offer bespoke customization, but
the plan is to make and maintain the complete Bombax software as open
source. We are working on a couple commercial solutions that run on
Bombax and hopefully an eco-system of free and commercial packages
will become available as time goes on.

Hi Dominic,

Do you have a time frame for all this? Including when you are going to
make this public (press etc)?

I am not the one that can help developing this unfortunately (yet). I
don't believe my skills are adequate but I certainly don't have the
time.

On the other hand I am willing to test (as you know) but I also want/
need to move forward.

I have sort of committed to using Bombax a few months ago but had to
put it on hold until the most important issues/concerns were solved.

Now that you announced this move I have to decide to stay with my
current platform and start putting my energy in rebuilding parts of it
or I have to decided that I really move to Bombax.
However, when I really move to Bombax I need (re-)assurance that I
will be able to start using it soon the most important issues solved.

Thanks,

Marcel

Hi, Marcel.  We don't have a definite time frame, but the hope is to have the migration, web site changes, and final announcement done within May.  We've set up the initial place for the code at http://code.google.com/p/bombax/ and will be adding code this week.

Dominic,

Any word on open sourcing yet?

Thanks,
