PRESS STATEMENT BY THE WEST RAND REGIONAL
EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF THE AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS ON THE 9TH
REGIONAL CONFERENCE
The
West Rand Regional Executive Committee of the African National Congress would
like to thank all the delegates from branches across the West Rand region for a
successful conference held from the 17th to the 19th
October 2014. This Conference held under the theme “UNITED IN ACTION TO
REPOSITION WEST RAND FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF RADICAL SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC
TRANSFORMATION” reaffirmed our commitment to united action of ensuring the consolidation
of people’s power in advancing the transformative agenda of our social and economic
outlook.
The REC
would like to further thank our allies, the South African Communist Party, COSATU
and SANCO with their valuable contributions during the conference. We would
also like to thank our stalwart comrade Aziz Pahad who graced our conference
with his sterling address, reflecting on our historical mission as an
organisation both here at home and in the global society.
The 9th
Regional Conference will go down in history in that it was held during the
month of October, a month of our most humblest leader comrade OR Tambo the late
President - General of the ANC who led the organisation under very trying times
of our struggle for freedom for 30 years.
The month
of October is a revolutionary month that must in the main be about
strengthening the unity of our organisation and the Alliance, something OR
Tambo lived for both in theory and practice.
The
conference was better defined by four key focus areas from which delegates
adopted resolutions namely, Organisational Renewal, Radical Social
Transformation, Radical Economic Transformation and Transformation of the State
and Governance. These resolutions as adopted will serve as guidance to the
newly elected REC in the next 3 years of its term.
The
newly elected leadership collective working together with ANC branches, MKMVA
and the Leagues shall champion the unity of the alliance and the people of West
Rand and shall serve a game-changer in the politics of the region noting the
mandate thrust upon it by ANC branches.
As
we reposition the Region, over the next three to six years we shall focus on
developmental approaches that seek to better the lives of the people of West
Rand. This shall be done in an integrated manner in order to harness the work
of ANC Parliament Constituency Offices, Provincial Government Departments and municipalities
in particular as drivers of our developmental agenda for the people of West
Rand. Throughout, the ANC REC will serve as the strategic centre in the Region
providing the necessary leadership.
Conference
took a firm stance on repositioning and turning the West Rand Region around,
whereby every public representative and strategic cadre from the region will be
ambassadors for development across our Region. This approach to our historical
task to our people will be done through our municipalities and we appeal to
provincial and national government to support our efforts to turn this Region
around.
While
observing the continuous building of vibrant and dynamic branches supported by the
REC and Sub-regional structures, we will ensure that our approach is informed
by consistent political education of our members, membership recruitment,
renewal and campaigns including those on international solidarity.
Constant
engagement with the membership and local communities on the West Rand will be
at the centre of our organisational renewal programme, this being complemented
by embracing modern methods of making contact, including technology thus complementing
our traditional interaction methods.
Conference
committed the REC and all structures of the ANC to give undivided attention to
our Leagues, both in terms of its leadership and membership. The next three
years will be used to ensure that the leagues of the ANC play an important role
in sustaining the significance of the ANC to the constituencies we serve. The
ANC in the Region has further committed to work with the MKMVA to ensure that
they are integrated in the programmes of the ANC and the plight of
ex-combatants receives the attention it deserves.
Importantly,
the ANC West Rand conference delegates reaffirmed the 12th ANC
Gauteng Provincial Conference stance on the review of the E-toll system.
Conference
further endorsed the progressive efforts towards the Gauteng Global City Region,
in the context of ensuring better living conditions for our people and
advancing social and economic development. We have therefore recommitted ourselves
to the advancement of Vision 2021 of working towards a Metro form of government
on the West Rand by 2021. The leadership collective shall consequently continue
to pursue measures in respect of the legalisation of transitional arrangements
in this regard and commence working as a unicity as part of preparing for a
metro system of government for the 2021 Local Government Elections.
Conference
further called that all service delivery response teams in municipalities
across our region be reactivated and all service delivery queries from our
society be attended to promptly.
Under
our theme “UNITED IN ACTION TO REPOSITION WEST RAND FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF RADICAL
SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATION”, Branch delegates at the 9th conference
of the ANC West Rand Region elected a leadership collective that will ensure
that all resolutions taken at this historic conference are implemented without
fear or favour. The following are members of the ANC West Rand Regional Office
