Yes, it's our holiday, Wilde Women of mine! I hope you enjoyed your
romp on your broomsticks. Tonight irene and two fellow detroit befanas
are playing at chet baker, via polese, and at least lisa and I will be
there. If y'all are around, could be a good opportunity to toast to
being toste.

It is TOMORROW that we had all arranged to meet again, hopefully
having done our "homework". I confess that I only finished my first
reading of what I was assigned to do TODAY, but I already have some
ideas about it.

IF, as I suspect may have been the case, we have NOT been "good
women" (the subtitle of lady windermere's fan) and not done our
homework, or at least not sufficiently, we always can go back to Plan
A and DO aWoNI. I suspect we will all agree on Angie's cuts of the
text...

So, as usual...I can throw together a bite to eat, who can come early
is welcome, who needs a lift can get one, who comes later is also
welcome.

It has been suggested that my house is an inconvenient spot for some.
Where would you propose instead? We are open to suggestions.

It has also been expressed that extraneous people (including my
daughters) create distraction and should not be included while we are
working.

I have not yet been to speak with Ferrarini at Dehon- we can plan to
meet him, perhaps not en masse, but severally, anyway. He has always
told me he would give plenty of support to any production I chose yo
mount. I believe this will include some financing for publicity, sets,
costumes, organizing, as well as critique, venue, personnel,
equipment,,,etc etc etc...(not mention the essential MORAL support!).
We also can speak to the woman who owns Cinema Fossolo, which has
successfully been hosting English theatre groups for years. And Angie
has suggested Teatro Navile...

so hasta manana, if not stasera,
baci,

Dear Shanna,

Thanks for your email and Happy New Year to everyone.
I have seen your email only now and sorry to say but I didn't realise that
it was this Thursday that we are meeting. I didn't jot it down nor register
it in my brain.
I will make a point of coming next week "alone".

See you all soon.

Calling all Wilde Women

Ok, so, it's new year and we have a wondeful project to work on, so I'd like to reply to Shanna's mail and questions with some suggestions:

1. Regardless of where we've all got to with our Christmas homework, is everyone available for the meeting tomorrow evening? Even if it's to get ideas clear and give each other a hand with the work still at hand, meeting would definitely be a good idea.
2. As for where, I agree that even though Shanna, your cooknig is amazing and it's great to know we can count on your hospitality and your flat, I think that meeting somewhere "neutral" could be a good idea and help us focus on the meeting. So my suggestion is:
Cafe de La Paix, Via Collegio Di Spagna. It's a good place to meet as it's usually quiet, it's central but relatively close to the viale and places where cars can be parked. If we meet at 20.00/20.30 then there's time for those who finish working earlier to go home, sort out dinner if they want to, and come back, or for those who finish later (like myself.. sniff sniff), to get a bite to eat but without it distracting from the main reason for the meeting. They also have great international wine. and it's also a nice place to go to, so lots of birds with one stone.
So, that's my suggestion: Cafe' de la Paix, tomorrow 20/20.30. If that's ok with everyone, then I can phone and try and book a table, although I don't think it'll be necessary.

Wilde Women...

Ok, as promised here are the minutes from last night’s meeting. First of all I would just like to say that I left feeling very positive. It was very kind of Cafe’ de la Paix to stay open for us even though we were literally the only people there! I think we managed to focus and made lots of progress - I think it was really productive! It really feels like it’s coming together now and we’ll soon be able to start rehearsing and getting our teeth into it..

So, here’s how the evening went:

1.       Administrative and organisational matters discussed:

a)      Meeting places: unfortunately as we’re all so spread out over Bologna I think we came to the conclusion that no matter where we hold the organisational meetings, it’s almost always likely to put someone out, so we agreed to alternate places. The requisites for the choice of place are: quiet and secluded so we can concentrate on the meeting and we agreed the people present should only be us Wilde Women.

The next meeting, as Lisa mentioned in her email is: at Lisa’s, Sasso Marconi (Via Santa Liberata, 8 347/0714343. Sat 30th Jan, 3pm. Time: 2 hours approx.

2.       Dehon on Thursdays has various shows on (ask Shanna for more details).  She suggested going this Thursday and to also speak to Guido at Dehon. This definitely needs to be done at some point. What are your thoughts?

3.       To have men or not to have?? That was the question. The answer was: No. Although, Giorgia has an Italian thespian a disposizione if need be...

We then took it in turns to present the work so far, the idea behind each play, any choice of scenes, characters. It’s still a work in progress but so far..

Sonia: An Ideal Husband

Main characters: Robert Chiltern, his wife Gertrude, Gertrude’s sister, Mrs Chevely, Lord Gorin and his father.

My proposal was a choice of two possibilities: To do the initial scene of the political party or various scenes put together, which I haven’t finished doing unfortunately and will present in full detail at the next meeting. The idea behind the first option is that even though this scene introduces the main characters of the play, it might well work as a finale’ for our Review. There are six main characters, so could also be a way to get everybody on stage for the finale’.

Giorgia: The Importance of Being Ernest

Main characters: Lady Bracknell, Jack Worthing, Gwendolin, Cecily and Algernon.

One or two scenes: The main scene between Lady Bracknell and Worthing on his origins and the scene before where Gwendolin and Worthing declare their mutual love. Possible third scene: near the end, between Algernon and Cecily.

Lisa: Dorian Gray

4 characters.: Dorian Gray, Basil the painted and Henry and ??

Lisa’s looking at an adapted version and creating our own adapted version.

Julia: Salome’

Characters: Salome’, Herod, John the Baptist (or at least his head), possibly her father (is that right?)

Two scenes: Where Salome’ is refused a kiss by John. And the Head on a place revenge scene that follows. We spoke about the possibility of doing a slideshow of artwork based on this Biblical story, inc. Caravaggio.

Shanna: Lady Windemere’s Fan

Three characters: Lady Windemere, her mother Mrs  Erlynne and the Duchess of Berwick.

Shanna’s in the process of writing a collage of scenes.

Angie: It’s a shame you couldn’t make the meeting! Could you please send your ideas via the google group?

Work to do before next meeting:

We agreed we’d all write (or find!) a brief summary of the play we’re doing. And then copy and paste the scene/scenes/collage of scenes and post it here (creating a file) so we can all have access to it.

Before next time we should start to think about casting. We agreed to be as fair as possible, to try and all have a variety of roles and for main roles to be distributed evenly if possible. If anybody has any preferences for roles they would like to do or people they would like to cast, then this should be presented at the next meeting. We talked about directing options. Ideally we should be directing the play we have studied, but if we have also chosen to do a main role in it, then this may have to change and so we always have someone else directing us. We’ll organise all of this at the next meeting when the casting options will be clearer. Shanna, being the overall director, will obviously have a key role in directing, but without it being too much pressure, so it would be nice to try and distribute the acting and directing amongst us.

We will also have to think about narrating to tie the whole review together, but this will come later.

Ok, I think I’ve included everything. I hope so anyway! Now I just need to work out how to put it on the Google group page...

Hello Wilde Women,

Sorry to have been absent, but as explained to Shanna I had a colleague from London, that arrived on Thursday and left today.

Here is my idea:

Angie: A Woman of No Importance

Characters: Mrs. Arbuthnot, Lord Illingworth, Gerald Arbuthnot, Hester Worsley, Alice

Four scenes:

1. Lord Illingworth finds out that Gerald is his son and has a discussion with Mrs. Arbuthnot.
2. Lord Illingworth tries to kiss Hester.  Gerald is outraged and tries to strike him but his mother shouts out that he's his father.
3. Mrs. Arbuthnot gives her speech of love to her son.
4. Lord Illingworth and Mrs. Arbuthnot have a discussion about Gerald's future but he is dismissed - forever.

I will be doing a collage of the scenes taken from different moment of the play so that it all blends together.

See you all soon.

Hello there
Minutes from meeting on 06.02.10:

Woni: at the moment 35 mins. Needs cutting down to max 10 minutes, ideally less.

Ideal Husband: Scene between Goring and Dad: 6 minutes.
Scene between Cheverley and Goring: too long. Needs cutting.

Windermere: Timing ok. The cutting is good but a bit choppy and disjointed. Possibly difficult to understand. Talked about the possibility of combining the ballroom scene and letter-writing scene together. And possibility of using a mannequin on stage for chjange of costumes or extra characters.

Salome': 10 minutes. Fine.

Earnest: 10 minutes. Fine.

Next meeting at Julia's on Sat 13th at 3pm: via masi 22

See you there!
