GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!

FROM DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

Greetings and happy (calendar) new year from BMHQ! It's been a while since we've talked ... have you missed us? Awww.

So, ticket sales are starting up soon, with pre-registration for our Pre-Sale running from January 14-17. The sale itself takes place January 21, starting at 12 noon PST. Tickets in the Pre-Sale go for $800, which subsidizes (read: makes possible) our lower priced regular tickets and low income tickets. Then we'll have our Individual Sale on February 18 (pre-registration is February 11-14).

For full ticket information (it's strongly encouraged you familiarize yourself with this stuff), see our ticketing page. Now is a great time to make sure you can log in to your Burner Profile (required for registering for any sale), y'know, just in case.

In other news, starting in the next JRS we'll have a permanent section dedicated to our spiffy new Burning Man Arts program, so we can keep you up to date on art happenings on the playa and around the world. Because we like art. Like, a lot.

The Man burns in 235 days!

Thank You For Your Support!

Burning Man gratefully acknowledges the participants, volunteers and supporters who joined us in 2014 in celebrating and exploring the limitless creative possibilities of our community.

We’re a community-based organization, and everything we do is driven by community participation, communal effort and gifting. While ticket sales cover the cost of producing the event in Black Rock City, your generous donations support our year-round work directly, as well as our organizational capacity to execute them.

We encourage you to look back at a just a few of the highlights from our 2014 community-based programs and projects. We couldn’t have done it without your support!

Please help us spread the word about the many ways Burning Man is changing the world for the better. We appreciate your participation in our community and we appreciate your help in extending our work beyond Black Rock City.

Please keep participating!

Buying Burning Man Tickets? You Need a Burner Profile First!

If you intend to participate in any of Burning Man's upcoming ticket sales, you'll need to pre-register for them. And to pre-register, you'll first need a completed Burner Profile.

What does that mean?

  1. Create a Burner Profile account.
  2. You'll receive an email asking you to confirm your account.
  3. Follow the instructions in that email to complete the account creation process.
  4. Log in to your snazzy new Burner Profile and fill out the My Profile form.

Et voila, you're ready to register for a ticket sale during the designated pre-registration timeframes. Wondering when those are? See our ticketing page for all the dates and full information.

Umm Hey, Don't Put Ads on Your Burning Man Videos

We've gotten a sudden rash of YouTube videos submitted to the JRS that begin with auto-playing ads. And guess what? If you send us a video with an ad on it, we're not going to publish it. And odds are, we'd really like to publish your video.

Why? Well, it violates Burning Man's principle of Decommodification. If you've been to Black Rock City before — and we assume you have, since you had to shoot that 36-minute video of your friends dancing in neon underpants somewhere — you might have noticed that people actually go to the trouble of blocking out or defacing the company logos on their equipment, their rental trucks, and so forth. That's because, to quote the 10 Principles:

"[O]ur community seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. We stand ready to protect our culture from such exploitation."

So, same goes for your videos. We really want to share your videos, but if there are ads on 'em, then nope. Ain't gonna happen.

Thanks for your consideration.

Building a Temple

Shalaco Wordsmith worked on the Temple of Whollyness in 2013, and he's written and photographed one doozie of a blog post about it:

"One of the splendid luxuries of working on Temple Crew is feeling like you are camping at the edge of infinity. Up until the event, the crew gets to camp on the edge of the horizon in deep playa. I’m just starting to realize that being recruited to Temple Crew has not been a consolation prize, but something far greater than I had even dreamed of."

Burning Man as a Maker Movement for Jungian Archetypes

We love our dear Caveat Magister, but boy, is he nuts. It appears that the raging arguments in the Burning Book Club about "Culture and the Death of God" last year weren't enough for him, so he's starting it up again:

"It’s 2015 now, and I’d really like to finish the book, and as long as I’m reading it, I might as well finish the book club thing too. Why? Because my parents always said 'Eat everything on your plate, young man,' and that’s why I have high blood pressure today."

The Therapeutic Power of Radical Self-Expression

Speaking of whom, Caveat also recently wrote a post about one of the psychological keys to why Burning Man culture works:

"[I]t may very well be … humanistic psychology has often said so … that what we call 'radical self-expression' is in fact a vital component of mental health. While the public perception of creative genius ties it to madness and mental illness, research actually suggests that it is human beings who lack an outlet for their creativity – in whatever form is meaningful to them – who are at a higher risk of depression and mental illness."

A 747 at Burning Man? Oh Hell Yeah!

3 stories tall. 4 buses wide. Half a football field long. These people are bringing a hot-damn jumbo jet to the playa.

"In 2015 we will bring to Burning Man one of the largest and most inspiring art installations the community has ever seen. This is a real Boeing 747 that we are modifying into a giant, movable interactive experience for Burning Man 2015 and many years to follow."

Sure hope they're able to pull this one off, because yeah.

Jared Mechaber's Burning Man 2014 Pictures

Here's a cool, small gallery from Jared Mechaber that's a good mix of everyday playa life and weirdo surrealism. We aren't sure which side we like better. Jared writes:

"With the eye of a 15 year veteran of Black Rock City, I have posted 75 of my best 'moments' of life on the Caravansary Playa."

Check it out on Jared's website.

"Default World" by Brent Walsh

+10 points for being the first Burning Man music we've ever heard that sounded like this. People who like strummy acoustic guitars, poppy melodies, and overtly Burning Man-y lyrics will dig this tune:

"Over the past 7 years, I The Mighty vocalist/guitarist Brent Walsh has been writing his own eclectic mix of material between his work with the band, culminating in his debut solo album, 7.

'Default World' from the album, was inspired by Walsh's experience at Burning Man.

'The experience was life-changing, and I strongly encourage anyone from all walks of life to consider experiencing it at least once in their lives,' Walsh said. 'When you're there, you refer to everything outside of that little makeshift town in Black Rock City, NV as the default world.'"

Photos from Heff!

Gorgeously intricate gallery. Heff writes:

"Just wanted to share some of the wonderful sights I managed to capture at Burning Man this year. The experience always recharges my creative batteries and leaves me reinvigorated for another year."

What Are YOU Gonna Do About It?

'Tis the fallow season of the Burning year ... the Decompression wave is receding (but not completely washed asea), and the Burner world goes into a bit of hibernation.

Or does it?

The non-profit Burning Man Project is hard at work spreading Burning Man culture around the world, keeping the fires alive, and sharing the transformational power of this experience with more people in more places, year-round.

And YOU can be a part of it. Get involved! Find your local Regional Group, tap in, and get something going! Or, if you want to fly solo (sure, why not?) tap into your own playa experience, and share it with the folks around you. 2015 is off and running, so why not take the opportunity to affect some change in your corner of the Burnerverse?

How Do I Support a Burning Man Art Project? Let Us Count the Ways!

So you'd like to help out with an art project, but you're not sure how. Well, you can gift your services, skills, time, resources, or funding, and there are plenty of projects in need of assistance. How do you find them? Here's how:

EVENTS AND HAPPENINGS

Kiwiburn — Hunterville, New Zealand — Jan 21-26

So let's say you happen to be in New Zealand, or plan to be there in the next couple weeks. Well, you're in luck, because the 12th annual Kiwiburn —  the official New Zealand burn — takes place January 21-26 on the north island. Their art theme is WYRD, which sounds great to us.

SOUNDTRACK FOR THIS JRS

We were listening to ...

Nomo. It's really gritty Afrobeat from Michigan, of all places. Also, BloodSugarSexMagik by the Red Hot Chili Peppers came on thanks to shuffle at one point, and we were not the least bit mad about that.

And then there was some Adron thrown in for kicks.
