GET ME OFF THIS CRAZY RIDE!

FROM DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

Howdy folks, and welcome to this edition of the Jackrabbit Speaks!

It's ticket time, and the registration period for the Individual Ticket sale is upon us. Register for the sale anytime between now and Saturday, February 14 at 12pm (noon) PST, through your Burner Profile. The sale itself starts Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at 12pm (noon) PST.

Demand for Burning Man tickets these days definitely outstrips supply, so we wish you the best of luck. And remember, this isn't your last chance at tickets ... there's STEP, the Low Income program, and the OMG Sale in August. And there's the open market — as people's plans shift and change, they'll be looking to offload their tickets. Stay positive, connect with folks, and don't give up.

Meanwhile, we hope you enjoy the usual robust and random offerings we've got for you in this edition.

The Man burns in 205 days. (Speaking of which, check out our spiffy new countdown page!)

The Individual Sale for Burning Man 2015 tickets starts Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at 12pm (noon) PST, and is first-come first-served.

To participate in the Individual Sale, you must have a completed Burner Profile and pre-register for the sale (through your Burner Profile) between now and Saturday, February 14 at 12pm (noon) PST. (NOTE: It doesn't matter when during this time period you register.)

Please feel free to submit your questions!

Here ya go, have at it!

What the Heck Happened with Will Call Last Year?

Let's just go ahead and say there were, um — significant challenges — at the Box Office last year. Well, we aim to do something about that for 2015 and beyond.

The Generator in Reno Needs Your Support

The Generator, a radically inclusive maker space that has been the home of construction for Burning Man art projects such as The Pier, Embrace, The Library of Babel, and many others, has been in conversation with the city of Reno to develop a second and significantly larger location. For this venture, the 100+ person artist group led by Matt Schultz has been vying to rent a 5.5 acre piece of unused land owned by the City of Reno for $1 a year.

City councilman David Bobzien has called the steeply discounted rent "a conscious investment on behalf of the citizens of Reno," and the group has already raised $185k towards the remaining costs of project. Generator Phase II plans include an art sculpture park, a 50k square foot industrial arts center, a community garden, 15 - 30 tiny house artists' residencies, and a rebuilding of 2014's Embrace sculpture for permanent display.

However... there has been a slight hangup. And this is where the Generator needs your help.

At the last City Council meeting, the City of Reno delayed the potential deal. Some objectors include nearby neighbors who had been hoping to use part of the space as a parking lot. The Generator is an amazing community resource where dreamers, makers, engineers and builders can freely use tools, resources, and ample space to create art of every kind. This is what it looks like when the principles of Burning Man take hold in an urban community, and the Generator crew has asked for help from the Burning Man community to make it happen.

From Generator crew:
"Please send a quick note to the City Council about how The Generator is a wonderful place and that the City of Reno should support the Generator Phase II. Here are the City Council addresses: schi...@reno.gov, bobz...@reno.gov, Brek...@reno.gov, Due...@reno.gov, delg...@reno.gov, mcke...@reno.gov, Jar...@reno.gov, k...@nevada.unr.edu"

An Ad-Free Alternative for Your Videos

Apropos of our recent posts about ads on Burning Man videos, Crashette from the Internet Archive writes:

"Hey, there's still places to share your content online without having an ad slapped on. Instead of uploading your video to YouTube, why not add it to our Community Video collection at the Internet Archive?

Just like physical libraries, virtual libraries are a great place to get away from all that advertising in the world.

Find out how to upload on our site.

You can embed your videos, too! There are plenty of people who have already uploaded their movies from past burns, so take a look around - bet you see somethin' cool!"

Remembering Oly Lynch

Squachek writes:

"We lost a member of the Mystikal Misfits and Media Team tribes. Oliver Standfast Lynch is an amazingly sweet guy who left us at 31 while swimming in the ocean off the coast of New Zealand, his home. He is definitely one of those candles who burned twice as bright.

Oly was a member of the Profiles In Dust Media Team who documented the Burn with Media Team members Terry Pratt and Noelle Charles, and traveled the world as part of Terry's Kam Krü team of adventure photographers. He seemed comfortable, content and confident no matter where he was, especially while wearing his trademark playawear: a turban and robes made of kids' bed sheets.

As we begin our annual cycle of building BRC and the drama swirls, the suddenness of Oly's departure should remind us all to treat one another as if it's the last time you'll see them, because it very well could be."

Bringing the 10 Principles Home: A Series on Burner Activists

The first post in a new series by Shahid Buttar profiling activists taking Burning Man principles to the streets:

"Our annual rendezvous in the desert with 60,000 of our favorite people is a feast for the senses. It offers something — in fact, many, many things — for everyone. But what happens after the dust clears? How can our daily lives in the default world pay homage to our experience together in the desert?"

William Close’s Earth Harp Bridges Music and Sculpture

Mind-blowing profile of William Close, the artist behind the musical instrument contained in the heart of the 2011 Temple of Transition:

"A hush fell over the Burning Man crowd as a man high atop a platform glided gloved hands across several thick strings tethered between the stage-mounted instrument chamber and an architectural installation over 100 feet away. A sound emerged slowly—deep, undulating waves, like a celestial cello—that washed over the audience."

Burning Man May Feature 747 Airplane as Art Installation

Here's a quite well-balanced story about the 747 that might cruise onto the playa this year. It's the first JRS link for the Reno Gazette-Journal's new Burning Man reporter, Jenny Kane:

"The bigger, the better, when it comes to dreams at Burning Man. Usually. But, is it possible to dream too big?

One Burner, Ken Feldman, is about to find out this year, as he endeavors to create the biggest 'mutant vehicle,' or art car, that ever would grace the playa of the Black Rock Desert. The vehicle: a 747 airplane constructed from the remnants of has-been planes abandoned at an aviation 'boneyard' in the middle of the Mojave Desert in southern California."

Beyond Black Rock City

Design Indaba, a conference in South Africa at which Larry Harvey will be speaking, has written a round-up of the many ways Burning Man art and values are becoming year-round, worldwide phenomena:

"Burning Man Arts funds projects that prioritise community involvement in development and execution. Projects serve communities not only by exposing them to groundbreaking, outstanding artwork, but also by soliciting the community’s input and involvement. By inviting community participation at all stages of the artworks’ creation and display, these projects engender stewardship of and personal relationships with the works of art."

How Do I Support a Burning Man Art Project? Let Us Count the Ways!

So you'd like to help out with an art project, but you're not sure how. Well, you can gift your services, skills, time, resources, or funding, and there are plenty of projects in need of assistance. How do you find them? Here's how:

Camp Shiny: A Burning Man Camp for Autism

This is an amazing, positive playa project with a totally achievable goal. Help push them over the top. Jerry writes:

"For those on the autism spectrum, it may appear that the core Burning Man principles of Radical Inclusion and Radical Self-Reliance are in conflict. While it is true that the autistic need more care than the typical Burner, self-reliance means relying on others as little as possible, all Burners participate in a community of Gifting and Participation — no one goes it alone.

Our first year plan is centered around Anna, a 17-year-old with severe autism and epilepsy. She will be our test case, the person around whom we design an experience and learn how to make Black Rock City accessible to this group of potential Burners. The support structure will have to be customized to support Anna's unique needs. Anna is a solid case study — she is on an extreme end of the need-for-support spectrum. If she can do it, lots of autistics can."

SOUNDTRACK FOR THIS JRS

We were listening to ...

Human Voice (2014) by Dntel made for pretty solid email music. There's surely a more dignified use for it than that, but hey, this is our life.

Breakup Song (2012) by Deerhoof got us through the really gnarly part.

Went back in time for Foo Fighters' Grammy nominated Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace.
